Information for Current Students

Welcome

Our staff is committed to helping you succeed at The University of Iowa. We can tell you about University resources that may be available to you, and help you determine if you are eligible for services from our office.

Who is eligible for services?

Our staff works with students currently enrolled at the University as well as with students who have recently decided to come to the University. In order to qualify for services, a student must send us general information as well as disability documentation from a healthcare professional. For details, see Registration Process.

What kinds of services are available?

Our goal is to remove barriers to academic success wherever possible. Some possible accommodations include:

  • Alternative Exam Service
  • Alternative Media Services
  • Mobility Access
  • Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing

For more information, see Accommodations and Services.

Getting Started/Registering with SDS

If you are interested in registering for services, we ask that you first send us a completed Request for Services and Documentation Review form. You can download a copy here.

We will also need background information about your disability from your healthcare provider. For details, see Registration Process.

Frequently Asked Questions

We know you will have questions for our staff. As a start, we've put together a Frequently Asked Questions page with answers to some of the questions we hear most often. We encourage you to read this page and then contact us if you need more information.

Review Process Timing

A typical review process can take up to one week. During hectic periods such as the first weeks of the semester, the review process may take a bit longer.

Rights and Responsibilities

A clear understanding of your rights and responsibilities is critical to your academic success. We encourage you to review them carefully. See Student Rights and Responsibilities.

Grievance Procedures

Faculty and staff at The University of Iowa are committed making your academic experience a positive one. To ensure this, there are clear procedures for you to follow if you encounter a problem. See Grievance Procedures.

Scholarships

There are scholarships available specifically for students with disabilities. We encourage you to look into these in addition to investigating financial aid resources available to all students.
