The Scholarship/Awards Committee is responsible
for announcing, selecting and disbursing the following awards
in the School of Social Work:
John Craft Excellence in Research
Award (monetary award)
The Larry Panther Award (recognition)

Callie Ann Hall Award in Social Work:
The Callie Ann Hall Award in Social Work will be given annually to support a social work graduate student who is conducting research on the impacts of chemical dependency, its prevention and treatment. Examples of the types of activities that will be supported are funding of field research, travel to professional meetings and/or conferences, data processing and student financial need.
The criteria for selecting the recipient of the scholarship is based on motivation for and career aspirations in the area of chemical dependency research and treatment, and, secondarily, financial need.

Director's Award:
This is an honorary award for one graduating B.A student and one
graduating M.S.W. student in each center who has demonstrated
outstanding scholastic achievement, creativity, leadership and
service accomplishments. Announcement is made April 1st. Nomination
deadline is April 20th and the decision made by May 1st. The recipient
is notified via letter by May 10th. The award is received at graduation.

Dianne
Orton & Stephen Orton Scholarship:
One annual award of $750 made to a second-year MSW student who
shows interest in medical social work and will be doing his/her
placement at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Announcement
is made April 1st. Application deadline is April 15th and decision
is made by May 1st. The recipient is notified via letter by May
10th. The award is received the following September.

Graduate Scholarship
for Community Social Work
An annual award of no less than $500 each will be made to one
or more graduate students to help cover travel expenses related
to participating in immersion, travel seminar, and/or service
learning experiences that contribute to students’ appreciation
of community social work in diverse settings. The number of awards
allocated is determined by the selection Committee and dependent
upon availability of funding. A targeted announcement is made
to students participating in immersion, travel seminar and/or
service in early February for spring break participation and in
early March for summer participation. Application deadline is
2 weeks after the targeted call is made. The award is deposited
into the students’ account after the travel has been completed
.

H. Wayne and Donna
J. Johnson Award for Social Work Undergraduate Students
One annual award of up to $500 made to a junior or senior undergraduate
student who has been admitted to the major. Announcement is made
on October 1st. Application deadline is November 15th and decision
is made by December 1st. The recipient is notified via letter
by December 15th. The award is received the following January.

Janice Baumback Scholarship
Award:
One $1,000 annual award made to an MSW graduate student taking
advanced courses (who are entering into their second year if full
time). Announcement is made by April 1st. Application deadline
is May 30th. Decision is made by July 15th and recipient is notified
via letter by July 31st. The award is received the following October.

Jean H. Winter Scholarship Award:
One $1,500 annual award made to a junior undergraduate social
work student who is a resident of Iowa. Announcement is made February
1st. Application materials deadline is March 15th. Decision is
made by April 1st and recipient is notified via letter by April

Lola Moeller Zook & Leslie G. Moeller
Community Service Award:
One annual award of up to $1,000 is made to a graduate student
in Social Work who is studying, is active in, or intends to pursue
employment in the field of community service. Announcement is
made February 1st and application materials deadline is March
15th. Decision is made by April 15th and recipient is notified
via letter by May 1st. The award is received the following September.

Mildred J. Snider Memorial
Scholarship:
One $1,000 annual award made to a social work graduate student
based on career aspirations in policy development and research
and scholastic potential. Announcement for student self-nominations
is made March 1st. Application deadline is April 15th and decision
made by April 30th. The award is received the following September.

Student Diversity Scholarship Fund:
The Affirmative Action/Diversity Committee of the School established
this fund. The intention of this fund is to enhance recruitment
efforts of the School to recruit students of color. The fund is
used at the discretion of the Director in consultation with the
admissions committee chair. Currently, this fund is being developed.

John Craft Excellence in Research Award:
This award is made to honor the memory of John Craft, former Professor
of Research at the School of Social Work. Excellence in student
research in the area of child welfare is recognized with a monetary
gift to one undergraduate and one graduate student. Announcement
made in early fall and applications are accepted until January
15th. Decision is made by early-February and recipients are notified
via letter by mid-February. The award is received the end of February.

Larry Panther Service Award:
This is an award to recognize an undergraduate social work major
for outstanding contributions as a social service volunteer during
the academic year. Students, faculty and agency personnel are invited
to submit nominations for the undergraduate student who is graduating
in the current year and who has made an outstanding contribution
as a volunteer. The call for nominations is announced March 1st
and nominations are accepted until March 30th. Both the student
and the agency are recognized at graduation in May and receive Certificates
of Recognition.

Scholarship Committee
Membership:
The Scholarship/Awards Committee’s standing
members are the Program Administrator, the Operations Administrator
and one faculty person selected by the Director as a deployment
assignment.
