| Iowa Utilities Board Weatherization Grant |

This year UIEC will apply for a Weatherization Grant from the Iowa Utilities Board. The IUB will match up to $500 of the money we fundraise to go towards "weatherizing" the homes of disadvantaged, disabled, and elderly people in Iowa City before winter hits. This will include putting plastic over people's windows, re-caulking windows and doors, sealing holes, and weather stripping. We hope this activity will be a learning experience for everyone involved and help our neighbors save some money and energy this winter. We will have several fundraising activities over the coming months, such as a bake-sale, potluck, can pick-ups, etc. Also, if anyone has any good fundraising ideas please let us know! We will train volunteers and then begin weatherizing people's homes in late October/ early November. If you would like to be involved with this project through fundraising or going to people's homes please contact Stephanie Enloe. |

| UI Plastics Recycling |
|
The Plastics Recycling project is an ongoing effort to improve plastics collection (as well as other materials) throughout the UI campus. A waste characterization back in November 2007 revealed that approximately 50% of the University's waste is recyclable. Data from the charaterization helped the University to receive a large sum of grant money from the DNR and Coca-Cola, allowing for bin expansion on campus. New indoor and outdoor plastics bins are being placed around campus, with the first series of indoor bins being released August 2008. The UIEC hopes to continue working with Facilities Management to improve UI waste reduction and seek avenues for increased student recycling behavior.

| Iowa River Cleanup |

On October 25th, 2008, the UIEC will partner with the Civic Engagement Program for their annual "Make A Difference Day". We will be loading up into canoes and heading out onto the Iowa River to remove garbage and debris within the river and along the banks. This will not only be a fun time paddling around in canoes, but we'll also get to help our river firsthand.
To ride on the canoes you need to sign up! Please contact david-patton@uiowa.edu to let him know you'de like to be out on the water! The sign-up is primarily for organization, but also for saftey reasons! Sign up because spots are filling up!
