Writing Invitation #3: Where Do You Get Your Creative Energy?
To understand where you might draw some of your
creative energy, imagine that you are a multi-pronged plug. Think
of each prong as drawing in one kind of energy or imaginative thought.
Together, the prongs help you absorb everything that helps unlock
your imagination. Reflect on what activities you enjoy seeing, doing,
hearing, etc., that involve creative thought, and on how these endeavors
make up your creative self.
Do you read fiction? Novels? Short stories? Plays?
Poetry? If so, what makes reading enjoyable for you? Do you watch
TV, go to the movies, or rent movies for your VCR? What types of
movies or shows do you like to watch? Action, drama, comedy, romance,
thriller, horror, or documentary? When you're watching, what do
you think about? Do you imagine yourself as the hero/heroine and
try to predict what might happen next? Do you go to the theater
and watch plays or musicals? Is there anything about live performance
that excites you or makes you think?
What other creative activities grab your interest?
Art galleries, museums, musical performances, music videos?
Think about what you consider to be your creative
sources and reflect on why they interest you.
