The census for the 1855 edition of Leaves of Grass contains data from 178 known copies held in libraries and private collections scattered throughout the United States. We offer here several items dealing with the census.
-- Ed Folsom's essay, "The Census of the 1855 Leaves of Grass: A Preliminary Report" from the Fall 2006/Winter 2007 issue of WWQR, summarizes and analyzes the most recent findings. Click here for the essay.
-- Quick reference numbers from the census are found here. This file contains the tally for each of the questions asked in the original census forms, sent to librarians and collectors.
-- The census form sent to librarians and collectors can be found here.
-- The raw data from the census, found here, is organized in a Microsoft Excel file. Note that you can sort efficiently through this file using the "Autofilter" feature, found under the "Tools" menu and the "Filter" option. The data is current as of August 2008.
