General Information

The 56th annual Iowa Summer Music Camps (formerly known as the Iowa All-State Music Camp) offer students musical training and experience beyond what may available in their home schools, including group instruction, masterclasses, and classroom instruction in most phases of instrumental music. The entire program, together with a preview of life on a major university campus, is an invaluable experience for young people, not only in music but also in human relations.

Camp Activities

Activities include daytime and evening rehearsals for individual sections and organizations; masterclasses; elective classes, recreation and entertainment programs (picnics, swimming and camp social events); camp concerts and recitals are open to the public.

Eligibility and Admission

All school musicians who have completed the eighth grade or above may apply for admission. Those who have completed the seventh grade may apply for admission as commuter students only. Students must be recommended by their school instrumental music teacher. The Adult Band is for adults age 21 and over.

All students are required to attend all rehearsals, activities and concerts. Some sections and courses may close prior to the application deadline date. Submit the completed application forms and fees to:

Scholarships

All students who participated in the fall 2007 Iowa High School All-State Music Festival may deduct $50 from the tuition fee. All students who participated in the 2007 IMEA Middle School Honors Orchestra, or the 2008 IBA Middle School Honor Band may deduct $40 from the tuition fee. Students who have attended our Iowa Summer Music Camps in the past may deduct $40 from the tuition fee.

Each school is given three $40 string scholarships (see your orchestra director for details). Students who play tuba, oboe, bassoon, bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet or mallet/keyboard percussion are also awarded a $40 scholarship for Week One participation. In addition, many students receive partial or complete assistance from their music booster organizations or local service clubs. Ask your local music director for suggestions.

Minority Scholarships

Opportunity at Iowa provides a limited amount of scholarship assistance to qualified minority students. Additional information is included in the ISMC application packet.

Housing

ISMC students live in an air conditioned University residence hall under the direct supervision of counselors and house directors. Excellent buffet-style meals, prepared under the supervision of University dieticians, are served in the residence hall dining room.

Housing for the Adult Band participants will be in local hotels.

Cost

Week One (Band, Orchestra): $480 (Air conditioned room, board, tuition, 6 nights)
Week One (Adult Band, adults age 21 and over): Tuition $140 ($130 for New Horizons International Music Association members)
Week Two (Dan Moore Total Percussion, Piano): $450 (Air conditioned room, board, tuition, 5 nights)
Week Three (Jazz): $450 (Air conditioned room, board, tuition, 5 nights)

Commuters: Students living near Iowa City who do not wish room and board pay only the tuition fee of $190.

Week One Ensembles • June 8-14

Large ensembles include Gold Band (grades 10-13), Black Band (grades 8-12), and Orchestra (grades 8-12). We are pleased to offer an Adult Band. Adults age 21 and over are welcome to participate in the adult band and attend camp classes. Housing for the Adult Band participants will be in local hotels. Week One Courses

Course elective offerings include topics in Music Theory, Music Appreciation, Double-Reed Making, Instrumental Conducting, beginning class piano, piano masterclass, organ class, Introduction to Finale (music notation software), Introduction to Electronic Music, World Percussion for Non-Percussionists and Music in Film

Week Two Percussion Camp • June 15-20

Part of the YAMAHA Sounds of Summer national clinics, students enrolled in our percussion division will experience a week in the life of Iowa Percussion. Students will explore a wide variety of topics including: concert, marching, jazz, and world percussion. Students will have the opportunity to study with some of the top specialists in the country in a "Total Percussion" setting. Percussion faculty to include Dan Moore (Percussion Area Head, The University of Iowa, Camp Director; keyboard and world percussion), Mat Britain (Nashville recording artist, steel band director, steel pan and world percussion), and Ernest Jennings (University of Wisconsin - Madison). Our YAMAHA Sounds of Summer clinician will be announced soon!

Week Two Piano Camp • June 15-20

Campers will be exposed to a wide variety of piano-related topics in a fun and non-competitive atmosphere: daily piano lessons with UI faculty members Alan Huckleberry and Réne Lecuona, classes in music theory and piano literature. Another highlight will be a course in music technology and composition which will utilize the School of Music's state-of-the-art Roland computerized keyboard lab. Special events will include sessions on piano technology, harpsichord playing, and faculty and student recitals. Campers should prepare 2-3 selections to study with our faculty during camp.

Week Three Jazz Camp • June 22-27

Our jazz division will give students opportunities to interact and perform with professional jazz musicians throughout a week of music-making in small group/combo settings. Areas of study will include jazz improvisation, jazz theory, basic arranging skills, Soundpainting, and the art of jazz listening. The 2008 faculty will include Brent Sandy (trumpet), Steve Grismore (guitar), Jim Dreier (drumset), Evan Mazunik (piano), Mark Urness (bass), Rich Medd (trombone), Paul Scea (woodwinds) and John Rapson, Director of UI Jazz Studies. The campers will perform as part of the popular Friday Night Concert Series in downtown Iowa City.
