Information for students about the What is the Spanish Writing Center? The Spanish Writing Center has been established to provide assistance to undergraduate students in 100-level courses with their papers. The mission of the Spanish Writing Center is to help students focus on issues of content, organization, and structure when they write in Spanish. Our goal is to help students become better writers, not to fix pieces of writing. Who is eligible to receive help at the Spanish Writing Center? The Spanish Writing Center is designed to serve students in the following FLIP courses: Students in other 100-level Spanish courses may also receive help with their writing projects on a space-available basis (except that students in 35:116 Advanced Composition and 35:170 Advanced Grammar, which have a different focus, should consult directly with their instructor). How do I make an appointment? Fall 2008 Schedule Make a 30-minute appointment on the sign-up sheet on the door of 480 Phillips for the current week or the upcoming week. We advise you to plan ahead, and not wait for the last minute to make your appointment. Who are the writing tutors? The writing tutors in the Spanish Writing Center are graduate students in Spanish or a related field who are also teaching assistants in Spanish. What should I bring to my appointment at the Spanish Writing Center? You should bring your notes, any drafts you have written (with your instructor’s comments, if you have any), and a copy of the assignment. If you are writing about a text (e.g., a short story, a poem), you should bring a copy of the text also. What happens at a Spanish Writing Center conference? What kind of help should I expect to receive? The tutor will probably ask you to explain the assignment, and to talk about your goals and your plan for your paper. If you have already written a draft, the tutor will ask you to read it aloud and to talk about the ideas that you have already written and the ones that you still want to include. We expect that during this process, you will discover points in your paper where you need to elaborate, expand, or clarify your ideas. The tutor will work with you on these and other development and revision of content and organization. Will the tutor correct the errors in my paper? The Spanish Writing Center tutors will not correct linguistic errors in your paper, because their role is to help you with content and organization. However, sometimes errors in grammar and vocabulary can make a sentence or a paragraph incomprehensible. In these cases, the tutor will help you think of ways to express the same ideas more simply or idiomatically. Does the Writing Center offer any other services? The primary purpose of the Writing Center is to help students become better writers, and therefore priority goes to those students in the 100-level Spanish courses listed above. However, if there is space available (i.e., a tutor is available in the office and no one has made an appointment for writing assistance), then GEP students may receive walk-in tutoring help. Please note that tutoring help may not be scheduled; it is available only if writing center students are not scheduled. Do I have to do anything in exchange for receiving help on my papers at the Spanish Writing Center? There is no charge for the tutoring help that students receive in the Spanish Writing Center. We do ask that you "sign" and fill out a questionnaire that will help us monitor and improve the service we offer to students. If I have a question about the Spanish Writing Center, where do I go? For more information about the Spanish Writing Center, stop by 480 Phillips Hall and talk to one of the tutors. You may also contact Elizabeth Guzman in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.
