Support networks

  • Family Services—On this web site, find links to many campus and community resources, including:

  • Provost's Office—Tips for letting your professors know about your child and family responsibilities.
  • Student Parent Computer Loan Program—This pilot program lends University-owned computers to student parents on a per-semester basis.

Curriculum

  • Child Development Course—This psychology course examines theories and research in the areas of biological, cognitive, and social development.
  • Department of Psychology—Parent-child relationships are among the primary research areas of Grazyna Kochanska, the Stuit Professor of Developmental Psychology in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • School of Social Work—This division of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers course work in a variety of family-oriented topics, including child welfare and elderly services, and is home to the National Resource Center for Family Centered Practice.
  • Social Policy and the Elderly Course—This a guided independent study course offered in the UI School of Social Work covers public social policies and their effect on the well-being of the elderly.

Advocacy and education

  • Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity—This office supports and enhances the University's commitment to recruiting and retaining a diverse community of faculty, staff, and students.
  • Center for Diversity & Enrichment—This office coordinates a variety of campus programs and services designed to create a welcoming climate for students of color, first-generation college students, and students from low-income families.
  • UI President's Family Issues Charter Committee—This group reviews and makes recommendations about programs, plans, and policies to promote a positive climate for families of UI faculty, staff, and students.
  • Women's Resource and Action Center—This facility provides counseling, financial assistance, and a variety of educational programs for student parents.
