English
Language Requirements for Admission to the Graduate College
International applicants whose first language is not English must submit results of the Test of
English
as
a Foreign
Language (TOEFL) for admission to the Graduate College.
Graduate College TOEFL score requirements for admission
- Internet-based test (iBT): 81 or higher
- Paper-based test (PBT): 550 or higher
Some departments may require TOEFL scores that are higher than those required by the Graduate College. Visit the website of the department offering your degree program for its specific TOEFL requirement.
There is
no conditional admission for graduate students whose TOEFL scores are
below the minimum required.
TOEFL scores must be reported to the University directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS), which administers the TOEFL. The institutional code for The University of Iowa is 6681 on the TOEFL.
English proficiency requirement
Admitted students will also need to take an on-campus English
Proficiency Evaluation before their first registration for classes unless they have a TOEFL score of 100 or higher on the iBT or 600 or higher on the PBT. Some departments
may require students to complete an on-campus English
Proficiency Evaluation regardless of their TOEFL score.
Exceptions
The Graduate College's TOEFL requirement is automatically waived for applicants who have
completed a bachelor’s degree (or higher) at an accredited university
in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada (excluding French Quebec),
Africa (English speaking), Australia, or New Zealand.
Alternative to the TOEFL
A total score of 7.0 with no subscore lower than 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) may be used to satisfy the Graduate College's English-language requirement.
- Ask the center where you took the IELTS to send your official Test Report Form to The University of Iowa.
- All applicants who submit the IELTS as an alternative to the TOEFL will be required to take an on-campus English Proficiency Evaluation.
