The MA and the PhD in Anthropology are awarded by the Graduate College. The MA is available with or without a thesis.

Application procedures
For these degree programs, you will need to send some application materials
to your academic department and some to the Office of Admissions, which
handles Graduate College applications.
Materials to send to the department:
- Your official academic records/transcripts (current and former UI students do not need to provide UI transcripts)
- A brief statement of interest or intent regarding why graduate study in our program is desired
- Three
(3) Letters
of Recommendation*
- A
writing sample (preferably a research paper)
- A
copy of your master's thesis (if applying to the PhD program
directly)
- An Application
for Graduate Awards*
Materials to send to Admissions:
- A second set of your official academic records/transcripts (current and former UI students do not need to provide UI transcripts)
- Your official GRE General Test scores from the Educational Testing Service (the University's institutional code is 6681)
- International students may also be required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores to comply with the university's English Language Requirements.
- Once recommended for admission, international students must send a Financial Statement.
