The
PhD in Teaching and Learning with a focus in Art
Education is
awarded by the Graduate College. The PhD is administered by the College of
Education in cooperation with the School of Art and Art History. Application
is made to the College of Education.

Applicants must meet the Admission Requirements of the Graduate College and the department offering the degree program (review the department's web site or the General Catalog for departmental requirements).

Application procedures
For this degree program, you will need to send some application materials to your academic department and some to the Office of Admissions, which handles Graduate College applications.
Materials to send to the department:
- Your official academic records/transcripts
- Three (3) Letters of Recommendation*
- A statement of purpose
- Two examples of written work (papers previoulsy written for a course or original papers)
- A
representative portfolio (consisting of 12 slide reproductions
of artwork)
- An MA in Art Education from The University of Iowa or an equivalent degree from an accredited, degree-granting college or university
- If there are course-work deficiencies, students must register for pertinent courses.
- Two years of successful teaching experience in an elementary or secondary school is required prior to admission or completion of the doctoral program.

- A second set of your official academic records/transcripts
- Your official GRE General Test scores from the Educational Testing Service (the
University's institutional code is 6681)
- International students must send their official TOEFL scores from the Educational Testing Service (the
University's institutional code is 6681).
- Once recommended for admission, international students must send a Financial Statement.
