Classics (MA or PhD)

The MA and the PhD in Classics are awarded by the Graduate College. Instruction is offered by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The MA is a nonthesis degree.

Applicants must meet the Admission Requirements of the Graduate College and the department offering the degree program (review the department's web site or the General Catalog for departmental requirements).

Application deadlines

  • Fall semester—January 15 priority date to be considered for financial aid
  • Spring semester—December 1 (October 1 for international students)
  • Summer session—April 15 (March 1 for international students)

Application procedures
For these degree programs, you will need to send some application materials to your academic department and some to the Office of Admissions, which handles Graduate College applications.

Materials to send to Admissions:

  • One set of official academic records/transcripts. Send a second set directly to your department.
  • Official GRE General Test scores from Educational Testing Service (the University's institutional code is 6681).
  • International students must send their official TOEFL scores from Educational Testing Service (the University's institutional code is 6681).
  • International students also must send a Financial Statement.

Materials required by the department:

  • A second set of your official academic records/transcripts.
  • Three (3) Letters of Recommendation.*
  • An Application for Graduate Awards.*
  • A photocopy of GRE scores
  • A Statement of Purpose
  • A list of Greek and Latin works read in the original languages.
  • A five- to ten-page writing sample.

If you Apply Online, the $60 application fee ($85 for international students) is payable by MasterCard or Visa.
If you cannot pay by credit card, you may Download and Print an Application* and pay the fee by check or money order in U.S. currency made payable to "The University of Iowa."
