MSW, PhD, and the combined MSW/PhD in
Social Work are awarded by the Graduate College. The MSW is offered
with or without a thesis.

Application
procedures
For this degree program, you will need to send some application materials
to your academic department and some to the Office of Admissions, which
handles Graduate College applications.
Materials to send to the department:
- A photocopy of your academic records/transcripts (send official copies to Admissions, 107 Calvin Hall)
- MSW applicants must submit:
- PhD candidates must submit:
- Four letters of reference attached to the specific completed School of Social Work PhD Recommendation Forms*
- The School of Social Work PhD Application form*
- A résumé
- An example of your scholarly writing
- A personal statement of your professional goals, guidelines are addressed in PhD Admissions Packet*

- MSW/PhD combined-degree candidates:
- Before January 1, e-mail the PhD Program Director carol-coohey@uiowa.edu, after January 1, contact Interim PhD Program Director mercedes-bern-klug@uiowa.edu, to first determine your eligibility for this combined program.
- Candidates will submit all parts of both the MSW and PhD applications.

GRE General Test scores from the Educational
Testing Service are required only for the PhD and the combined
MSW/PhD programs (the University's institutional code is 6681)
- International
students must send their official TOEFL scores from Educational
Testing Service (the University's institutional code is 6681).
- Once recommended for admission, international students must send a Financial
Statement.
