Social Work (MSW, PhD, or Combined MSW/PhD)

The MSW, PhD, and the combined MSW/PhD in Social Work are awarded by the Graduate College. The MSW is offered with or without a thesis.

Application procedures
For this degree program, you will need to send some application materials to your academic department and some to the Office of Admissions, which handles Graduate College applications.

Materials to send to the department:

• A photocopy of your academic records/transcripts (send the originals to Admissions)
• MSW applicants must submit:
  • School of Social Work MSW Application Forms,* (including three completed recommendation forms)
  • A statement of purpose and essays as described in the School of Social Work Admissions Policy,* (Section III-D)
  • A résumé
• PhD candididates must submit:
  • Four letters of reference attached to the four completed School of Social Work PhD Recommendation Forms.* Two must be academic.
  • The School of Social Work PhD Application*
  • A résumé
  • An example of your scholarly writing
  • A personal statement of your professional goals (Guidelines are addressed in PhD Admissions*)
• MSW/PhD combined-degree candidates:
  • E-mail the PhD coordinator at carol-coohey@uiowa.edu, to first determine your eligibility for this combined program; candidates will submit all parts of both the MSW and PhD.

Materials to send to Admissions:

• Your official academic records/transcripts
• Your official GRE General Test scores from the Educational Testing Service are required only for the PhD and the combined MSW/PhD programs (the University's institutional code is 6681)
• International students must send their official TOEFL scores from Educational Testing Service (the University's institutional code is 6681).
• Once recommended for admission, international students must send a Financial Statement.

If you Apply Online, the $60 application fee ($85 for international students; $100 for international students applying for Summer Session 2010 and beyond) is payable by MasterCard or Visa. If you cannot pay by credit card, you may Download and Print an Application* and pay the fee by check or money order in U.S. currency made payable to "The University of Iowa."
