Spanish (MA, PhD, MFA in Spanish Creative Writing)
The UI Department of Spanish & Portuguese offers an
MA and PhD in Spanish and an MFA in Spanish Creative Writing. The degrees are
awarded by the Graduate College. Instruction is offered through the College
of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The MA is offered without a thesis. The MFA is offered with a thesis.

Applicants must meet the Admission Requirements of the Graduate College and the department offering the degree program (review the department's web site or the General Catalog for departmental requirements).

Application procedures
For these degree programs, you will need to send some application materials
to your academic department and some to the Office of Admissions, which
handles Graduate College applications.
Materials to send to the department:
- Your official academic records/transcripts (current and former UI students do not need to provide UI transcripts)
- Three (3) Letters of Recommendation*
- An Application for Graduate Awards*
- A one-
or two-page statement of purpose
- MA
applicants must submit a paper in Spanish that shows their ability
to do linguistic or literary analysis.
- MFA applicants must submit a sample of creative work in Spanish, at least 30 (but no more than 50) pages of fiction or 20 pages of poetry that demonstrate excellent creative potential.
- PhD
applicants must submit three research papers that demonstrate achieved
excellence in literary or linguistic analysis and argumentation. At
least one of these papers must be in Spanish.
Materials to send to Admissions:
- A second set of your official academic records/transcripts (current and former UI students do not need to provide UI transcripts)
- Your official GRE General Test scores from the Educational Testing Service (the University's institutional code is 6681)
- International students may also be required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores to comply with the University's English Language Proficiency Requirements.
- Once recommended for admission, international students must send a Financial
Statement.
