Teaching and research assistantships are a great source of extra income for graduate students, and they are available in most University departments. Stipends for 2007-08 are $16,277 for a half-time academic-year appointment and $19,894 for a half-time fiscal-year appointment.

Students holding a 25% or greater teaching or research assistantship appointment (covered by the COGS bargaining unit) are assured a minimum tuition scholarship of $1,962 per semester ($3,924 per academic year). This does not include scholarships for summer session enrollment. Rates are based on registration for 9 or more semester hours and are prorated as necessary.

Apply for Graduate Assistantship Awards

In general, people who have fellowships or assistantships quarter-time or more are classified as Iowa residents for tuition and fee purposes during the terms in which their appointments are held and any adjacent summer sessions in which they are enrolled.

Fellowships

  • Presidential Graduate Fellowships* are five-year awards. Doctoral students receive a minimum stipend of $23,000 plus tuition and fees for as many as four years. In the final year, recipients receive $25,000 plus full tuition and fees. For two of the five years and all summers, recipients have no assignments and are free to pursue their own studies, research, and writing.
  • Iowa Arts Fellowships* for first-year UI MFA students carry a minimum stipend of $15,000 for the academic year, plus tuition and fees for as many as two years. The second year’s award is contingent upon demonstration of exceptional progress toward completing the MFA degree. There are no departmental service obligations.
  • Dean's Graduate Fellowships* are for first-year graduate students underrepresented in their academic field of study. Doctoral students carry a stipend of $21,000 plus tuition and fees for the academic year. Master’s students receive a 10-month stipend of approximately $16,000 plus tuition and fees for up to two academic years.

Other financial support
The Graduate College invites departments and programs to nominate students for a limited number of additional awards in specific disciplinary areas. Other fellowships, scholarships, traineeships, and part-time employment are offered by many graduate departments and programs. Funds are received from both public and private agencies, individuals, corporations, and philanthropic organizations.
