Our track record
Since the University was founded in 1847, Iowa research has led to the development of buffered aspirin, blood banking, educational testing, the Gallup Poll and the Van Allen Radiation Belts, among many other achievements. But our research prowess doesn't stop there. Iowa also has:

  • Collected more than $5 billion in External Research Funding since 1966, including more than $382 million in fiscal year 2007. Funding has supported research on cancer, genetics, space physics, cystic fibrosis, public health, and many other fields.
  • The UI Research Foundation, which filed more than 178 patent applications on faculty and staff inventions and earned more than $15 million in license revenue in fiscal year 2006.
  • The UI Office of Corporate Partnerships, which fosters research-intensive alliances with Iowa corporations.
  • The IOWA Centers for Enterprise, Business & Commercialization Services, which assist Iowa businesses, communities, and start-up companies; promote economic development and tech transfer; help cultivate an entrepreneurial Iowa workforce; and optimize the flow of intellectual property into opportunities for licensing, commercialization, and business development.
  • The Oakdale Research Park, which helps firms establish working relationships with UI faculty scientists, physicians, and engineers. It is home to the National Advanced Driving Simulator, the UI Hygienic Laboratory, and the UI Center for Advanced Drug Development.
  • The UI Technology Innovation Center, a business incubator for new ventures using advanced technology. It has admitted more than 90 technology start-up companies since 1984.
