The University of Iowa Honors Program welcomes outstanding students who want to enrich their college experience with engaging course work, experiences, and friendships. Participating students can teach, conduct research, and join other honors students at social events and in living-learning communities.

Admission to the Honors Program
There is no application for admission to the Honors Program. Qualified students are notified upon admission to the university (or shortly after being admitted) if accepted into the program. There is also an individual review process for students who don't meet the criteria but request membership.

The requirements vary depending on whether you are a first-year, transfer, or international student.

Benefits of Honors Program membership
In addition to having access to resources and support staff at the Blank Honors Center (with its own library, computer lab, and study spaces), honors students at Iowa enjoy:

  • The best classmates and the best instructors. Enroll in special discussion or laboratory sections only for honors students.
  • Honors courses and seminars. Designate any university course an honors course with the instructor's permission, or enroll in one of the small, focused Honors Seminars taught by some of Iowa's top professors.
  • Personalized study plans. Take advantage of Iowa's broad course offerings to create your own field of study.
  • Social activities. Make new friends participating in Honors Progam events like the Daum Prom, trips to the theater or to go horseback riding, video game night, and group community service projects.
  • Living-learning communities. Live with other honors students in one of three Living-Learning Communities just for honors students.
  • Teaching opportunities. During your junior or senior year, you can help teach courses for first-year students and sophomores.
  • Research experience. Work with faculty researchers and earn course credit through numerous Undergraduate Research Opportunities, or design and conduct original research for an honors thesis or project.
  • Recognition. Receive honors commendation after your sophomore year, and graduate with honors at commencement.
