Iowa's 10 residence halls are located near the center of campus with easy access to the University’s free bus service, Cambus.
The residence halls are an ideal option for students who do not want to cook. Each room's contract includes a required meal plan consisting of 10, 14, or 20 meals per week. Students in certain types of rooms have an optional plan consisting of just five meals per week.
Important: Students who are interested in living on campus need to be aware that on-campus housing is not guaranteed with admission and a student who wants to live on campus must make a separate application for this purpose. If you wish to live on campus you should submit your housing application immediately after you are admitted as late applicants may not be able to be accommodated.
Application process and contract
University Housing & Dining will do its best to assign you to a permanent space in the residence halls if you apply in a timely manner. If you prefer to live off campus (private residence, condominium, apartment, etc.), do not sign up for campus housing. Once assigned to live in campus housing, you cannot cancel your contract.
- Students are notified of their room assignments beginning in June. If you arrive in Iowa City before receiving your assignment, contact University Housing & Dining in Burge Hall (319-335-3000) as soon as possible to confirm your reservation.
- Do not sign a lease for off-campus housing before you have checked with the University Housing & Dining office.
- If you have a residence hall assignment and also sign a lease for housing elsewhere, you may have two legally binding contracts. You could be responsible for paying rent on both places.
Living in the residence halls during breaks
Residence hall amenities vary during academic breaks.
- Winter break—Mayflower, Hillcrest, Daum, Parklawn, Building 3 at the Lodge, and Centerstone Apartments will be open for winter break 2010-11. There is a fee to stay in campus housing, and you must be registered at the desk. The other UI residence halls close 24 hours after the end of fall semester exam week and reopen the Saturday before spring semester classes begin.
- Thanksgiving and spring breaks—Residents of all halls may remain in their rooms during these two periods, but meal plan food service is not provided.
Global Village Living-Learning Community
The Global Village Living-Learning Community is specifically designed for students interested in global issues across all majors. Students interested in study abroad as well as international students will find like-minded students interested in learning about other cultures sharing interests in this community. Programs for this community will focus on getting to know each other, experiencing other cultures, and current global issues.
