Iowa Writers Community
Iowa is nationally known as "the writing university." The Iowa Writers Living-Learning Community provides the opportunity for first-year students interested in all types of writing to become acquainted with one another and to explore all the writing resources that are available at Iowa.
This community is ideal for students interested in any number of different styles and applications of writing, including:
- literary writing (poetry, short stories, novels);
- journalism;
- nonfiction writing (essays, memoirs, science writing, technical writing);
- translation;
- drama and film/radio writing;
- public relations; and
- the teaching of writing.
The community is located in a quiet environment in the UI residence halls.
A writing sample (due March 5, 2010) is required as part of the application.
Optional course
Community members may enroll in an optional course called Reading for Writers.
Activities
include:
As a member of the Iowa Writers Living-Learning Community, you'll participate in a variety of activities focused on writing, from attending readings to talking with authors, and learn about how best to prepare for a successful career in writing.
- Presentations by visiting authors and members of the Writers' Workshop,
International Writing Program, and Playwrights Workshop
- Opportunities
to visit with nationally known authors before or after public readings
- Access
to career information
- Special
opportunities to explore writing-related resources on campus, and to learn how to best to prepare for a successful career in writing
- Social
events with other students, faculty, and staff in formal and informal
settings
Accepts first-year students only
Applicants must be members of the entering first-year student class. This community does not accept transfer students.

Indicate this living-learning community as your first preference on your On-Campus
Housing Application and Contract. You must apply for housing before submitting a writing sample.
Writing sample
The writing sample must be submitted to Angie Cochran in the Office of the Provost by March 5, 2010.
