At Iowa, every student has an academic advisor. You must see your advisor to register for classes or to change your registration after classes begin, although you can talk with your academic advisor whenever questions come up. Just remember that advisors advise, you decide.

Academic Advising Center
Academic advisors provide intensive support for students through systematic and frequent contact. During Orientation you will meet with your advisor to talk about graduation requirements, select appropriate courses, and learn how to use campus resources effectively.

Most incoming students are assigned to an advisor in the Academic Advising Center (AAC). Some first-year students and transfer students are assigned directly to a departmental advisor based on their intended major.

Advising etiquette
College may be the first time in your life you’ve had to make and keep your own appointments. During your first year at Iowa, you will have several types of appointments to set up with your advisor. Call to make appointments (and to cancel those you can’t keep). There are many students to be seen, and when you miss an appointment without calling to cancel it, another student loses a chance to be advised during that time.

Failing to make (or skipping) an appointment during early registration periods may cause you to miss your registration day.
