Foreign Language
Incentive Program (FLIP) allows students to earn extra college
credit in a foreign language. This credit is ungraded but counts toward
the hours required for graduation. There
are two FLIP options. Students may earn credit through both options, up to
a maximum of 8 semester hours (s.h.).
Students with Advanced Placement (AP) foreign language credit must avoid duplication and regression when registering for FLIP-eligible courses. Ask your advisor for help in choosing FLIP courses. FLIP Option 1—Entering students who complete an approved course at a level beyond the final course in a General Education Program-approved foreign language sequence with a grade of B- or higher will receive 4 s.h. of credit. To be eligible for this credit, students must take the Foreign Language Placement Test for the language (or languages) in which the credit is sought. Option 1 students can earn a maximum of 8 s.h. of credit (4 s.h. of credit in multiple languages). FLIP Option 2—Students who completed four years of second-language study in high school (or who have completed the foreign language component of the General Education Program by some other means, including foreign language study at The University of Iowa), may, at any time before graduation, earn up to 4 s.h. of additional credit for study of a language different from that which they studied in the General Education Program. Students may receive 2 s.h. for the first course in that different language (if completed with a grade of B- or higher). They may also receive an additional 2 s.h. for a sequential course in that different language (if completed with a grade of B- or higher). Option 2 students can earn up to 4 s.h. of credit in a single language and a maximum of 8 s.h. of credit in multiple languages.
