The Mathematics Incentive Program allows incoming Iowa students to earn extra credit in math.

Students who obtain sufficient scores on the Level 3 Mathematics Placement Test (or the ALEKS Exam) and enroll in an MIP-eligible course can earn ungraded credit for the prerequisite course providing they receive a grade of B or higher.

A Level 3 Math Placement Test score of 15 or higher will place you in MIP-eligible course work.

Here's how it works
If you get a grade of B or higher in the course the MIP places you into, you also get 4 semester hours of credit for the prerequisite course you skipped. The extra credit is ungraded, but it counts toward your hours required for graduation. It is counted as residence credit. MIP credit is not granted for college or college-level course work for which credit has been received.

If you already have AP or CLEP credit in math, duplication or regression must be avoided when you register for MIP-eligible courses. Check with your advisor and the Department of Mathematics to help you choose applicable courses.

You are only eligible for MIP credit during your first or second class registration.
