That’s why The University of Iowa expects all first-year students to PICK ONE!—at least one activity to get involved in during their first semester to enrich their Iowa experience.

Explore the options
We don't expect you to select an activity right away. Instead, we encourage you to explore the many activities and opportunities available, then pick at least one to get involved in during your first semester.

Activities that count
There are literally hundreds of programs, activities, and organizations to consider.

  • Campus Employment—Go online to find a job for extra cash or work experience. Iowa students are developing web sites, staging special events, and working as research lab assistants across campus—and that's just a few options on Jobnet, a constantly updated list of UI employment opportunities.
  • Fraternities & Sororities—About 10 percent of Iowa students are involved with a fraternity or sorority. Some live in chapter houses on campus; others don't live-in but actively participate in charity fundraisers, the construction of Homecoming floats, and other social and philanthropic activities.
  • Honors Opportunities—University of Iowa students have a strong record of academic excellence, and there is no shortage of opportunities to demonstrate that through educationally purposeful cocurricular and extracurricular activities.
  • Intramural or Club Sports—Work off some steam after class. Join the soccer or sailing club, or join a low-key intramural league in an individual or team sport like flag football, billiards, or sand volleyball.
  • Leadership—Gain leadership experience and influence University decisions as a member of UI Student Government, your residence hall's student governing board, or in another leadership role.
  • Multicultural Activities—Many groups at Iowa are devoted to welcoming, supporting, and developing leadership among diverse populations. The Multicultural Calendar lists activities throughout the year.
  • Performing Arts—Sing, dance, act, paint, or play music. Whatever your creative interest, express it through one of the co-curricular performance groups on- and off- campus, even if you aren't seeking a degree in music, theatre, art, or dance.
  • Student Organizations—These groups run the gamut of student interests, from religion to politics, bass fishing to chess. There are also plenty of groups based on a common area of study. Or, if the existing 400-plus organizations don't interest you, create one of your own! Ask UI Student Government for start-up funds.
  • Volunteering—Foster a passion for community involvement by researching volunteer opportunities on and near campus. The UI Civic Engagement Program can help you connect on a local, national, or global level.
  • Other Activities—Use the "Search" function of our PICK ONE! Exploration Tool to find an activity that interests you.

Additional ways to explore campus activities:

  • Talk with other UI students.
  • Search the University web site.
