Tippie College
of Business
The Tippie College of Business admits students upon satisfactory completion of one to four semesters of pre-business study in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The accounting major has additional admission requirements. Highly qualified entering first-year students will be admitted directly into the College of Business through the Direct Admission program.
Application process for first-year students
First-year students interested in majoring in business apply to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as a pre-business major.
Direct Admission
First-year students with an ACT composite score of 27 or higher and a high school grade-point average (GPA) of 3.70 or higher will be admitted directly into the Tippie College of Business. Applicants who meet either the ACT or the GPA requirement may request special consideration for direct admission from the Tippie College of Business.

Admission requirements
Most students apply to the Tippie College of Business during their sophomore year through the standard admission option. Students should meet the following requirements by the end of the semester for which they are applying:
- Completion of at least 12 semester hours (s.h.) of graded UI credit
- Completion of four admission prerequisite courses:
- 22M:017 Calculus and Matrix Algebra for Business
- 22S:008 Statistics for Business
- 6E:001 Principles of Microeconomics
- 6A:001 Introduction to Financial Accounting
- A 2.75 cumulative grade-point average on the four admission prerequisite courses listed above (with no grade lower than C); all courses taken at the University of Iowa; and all college-level courses attempted
If your first language is not English and you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- If you graduated from a U.S. high school, you may be required to complete an English Proficiency Evaluation during your Orientation program. Exceptions are made if your ACT English subscore is 21 or higher, SAT Critical Reading score is 540 or higher, or if you have a TOEFL score of 100 or higher.
- If you graduated from a high school outside the U.S., you must present evidence of English proficiency by submitting an ACT English score of 21 or higher, SAT Critical Reading score of 540 or higher, a minimum TOEFL score of 80 with no subscore lower than 17, or an IELTS total score of 6.5 with no subscore below 6. Students who meet the ACT, SAT, or IELTS score requirement will also be required to complete the English Proficiency Evaluation at Orientation. Please note: students with a TOEFL score of 100 or higher will not be required to take the English Proficiency Evaluation.
