Individual Review Process
The individual review process is designed for applicants who do not meet our published admission standards. This process allows you to provide the admissions committee additional information that can be used in evaluating your application.

For applicants to the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences
If you wish to be considered under individual review, check the appropriate box on your application and submit your personal statement and two letters of recommendation. There is a separate
Individual Review Process for Engineering Applicants.

  • Personal statement—Your personal statement should speak to your academic goals and why you think you will be successful at The University of Iowa. Include any additional information that you feel is important to tell the admissions committee. Examples might be related to academic commitment, extracurricular activities, creative talents, aspirations, family circumstances, opportunities/experiences, factors affecting your academic record, or why you are applying to Iowa. Make sure your statement accompanies your application. If you apply online, you will submit your statement electronically.
  • Two letters of recommendation—Your two letters of recommendation should be written by teachers or counselors who can speak to your ability to be academically successful in a competitive undergraduate environment at a major research university. Have the letters sent directly to the Office of Admissions, 107 Calvin Hall, Iowa City, IA 52242.
