Conditional Admission
International applicants who do not meet the minimum TOEFL score for Regular Admission may be considered for conditional admission to the University.
Minimum requirements for consideration
Students who meet the academic requirements but not the TOEFL score requirements for regular admission are considered for conditional admission to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences if their TOEFL scores are in one of the ranges below.

As space permits, conditionally admitted students enroll in the Iowa Intensive English Program (IIEP) for up to one year.
Advancing
to regular admission
To change their admission status from conditional to regular (a prerequisite
for beginning study in a degree program), students must attain a minimum
TOEFL score of 530 on the paper-based test (197 on the computer-based
test or 71 on the Internet-based test) and complete
an English proficiency evaluation. Based on the results, these students may:
- be
allowed to take a full academic course load excluding English as a
Second Language (ESL) courses;
- be
required to enroll in credit-bearing ESL courses in addition to regular academic courses; or
- be required
to continue in the IIEP until their language proficiency reaches
an appropriate level.
Enrolling
in the IIEP with no admission to the University
Students without TOEFL scores or those with scores below 450 on the paper-based test (below 133 on the computer-based test or below 45 on the Internet-based test) are not considered for
admission
to the University. These students may enroll in the IIEP. However, IIEP
enrollment without conditional admission to the College of Liberal Arts and
Sciences
does not imply or guarantee admission to an academic program at The University
of
Iowa. |
