Regular Admission
Undergraduate applicants must meet minimum scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for regular admission to the University.

TOEFL score requirements
All applicants whose first language is not English must submit TOEFL results as part of the application process. (The University's institutional code is 6681.)

If you have a TOEFL Score of 530 or higher: A minimum TOEFL score of 530 on the paper-based test, 197 on the computer-based test, or 71 on the Internet-based test is required to be considered for regular admission to the University and to begin study in a degree program.

If you have a TOEFL Score of 600 or above: Newly admitted undergraduates whose TOEFL scores are 600 and above on the paper-based test (or 250 and above on the computer-based test, or 100 and above on the Internet-based test) may begin academic course work without restriction.

If you have a TOEFL Score Below 600: Applicants who present a TOEFL score below 600 on the paper-based test (or below 250 on the computer-based test, or below 100 on the Internet-based test) are required to complete an on-campus English Proficiency Evaluation before their first registration for classes.

Based on the results of the English Proficiency Evaluation, these students may:

  • be allowed to take a full academic course load excluding English as a Second Language (ESL) courses;
  • be required to enroll in credit-bearing ESL courses in addition to regular academic courses; or
  • be required to enroll in the Iowa Intensive English Program (IIEP) until their language proficiency reaches an appropriate level.
