College of Engineering
The College of Engineering admits qualified students directly into the college. Students should apply directly to the College of Engineering.

Admission requirements for transfer students
Admission is highly competitive and meeting the following minimum requirements does not guarantee admission:

  • Demonstrated success (As or Bs) in math, science, and engineering courses
  • Completion of High School Course Requirements
  • Completion of Calculus I
  • Completion of the equivalent of the Principles of Chemistry I or Introductory Physics I courses (e.g. the first semester of chemistry designed for majors or the first semester of calculus-based physics)
  • An overall grade-point average (GPA) that indicates success in engineering
    • No minimum semester hours are required for admission.

Application process
The process varies depending on whether you are a domestic (U.S. citizen) or international applicant. Apply to the College of Engineering.

Domestic Applicants (U.S. Citizens & Permanent Residents)
International Applicants

Application deadlines
Because of its policy of limiting enrollment, the College of Engineering may close admissions before the following deadlines. Early application is strongly recommended.

  • Fall Semester—April 1
  • Spring Semester—November 15 (October 1 for International Students)
  • Summer Session—April 1 (March 1 for International Students)

Degree Audit
When you are admitted, a Degree Audit will become part of your Admissions Profile in ISIS.
The audit:

  • tells you whether you have completed the necessary High School Course Requirements,
  • specifies which General Education Components and which requirements for your major you still need to fulfill,
  • indicates (for pre-business, pre-nursing, and pre-pharmacy students) which prerequisite courses necessary for applying to the respective college need to be fulfilled, and
  • monitors other degree requirements including your semester hours, GPA, residency requirement, and college-specific regulations.

Credit evaluation
The Office of Admissions evaluates transfer courses applicable to High School Course Requirements and General Education Program requirements, as well as a number of courses applicable to the requirements of your major. Your major department makes decisions about how the rest of your transfer courses apply toward the requirements for your major.

Transfer policies
Review the Transfer Policies to find out about calculating your transfer GPA, Iowa's course-repeat policy, and other Iowa credit transfer policies.

Transferring engineering course work
Review the engineering courses at other Iowa and Illinois colleges that have been preapproved for transfer to The University of Iowa.

English proficiency requirement
If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident whose first language is not English, you must take an English Proficiency Evaluation during your Orientation program. Exceptions are made in the cases of applicants whose ACT English subscores are 21 or above (SAT Critical Reading score of 540 or higher) and those whose Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores are 600 or higher on the paper-based test or 100 or above on the Internet-based test. Applicants seeking exceptions should contact the Office of Admissions.

Degrees available from the College of Engineering
This college offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (BSE) in six majors: biomedical, chemical and biochemical, civil and environmental, electrical and computer, industrial, and mechanical. These programs are accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology.
