Scholarships for First-Year Students, 2012
The following scholarships are available to full-time first-year students entering the University directly from high school.

Presidential Scholarship Program
This scholarship program consists of two tiers of awards:

  • The top 20 candidates are awarded the Presidential Scholarship and the Old Gold Scholarship, which have a combined value of $13,000 a year for up to four years ($52,000).
  • Up to 350 applicants in the next tier of candidates are awarded the Old Gold Scholarship, which is valued at $3,000 a year for up to four years ($12,000).
  • Both scholarships require an ACT composite score of 30 or above (or a combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1330 or above) AND a cumulative high school grade-point average (GPA) of 3.80 or above on a 4.00 scale.
  • Both scholarships require the same application and supporting materials.
  • Deadline to apply for fall 2012 was in December 2011.

  • Iowa's Presidential Scholars for Fall 2012 were announced in March 2012. Recipients of the Old Gold Scholarships were notified in January 2012.
Scholarship Tips
Expand your search. In addition to the scholarships listed here, review the UI Office of Student Financial Aid's list of Scholarships Awarded by Departments and Colleges (awarded to students in their first year and beyond).
Apply for financial aid. None of these scholarships disqualify students from receiving need-based financial aid. We encourage all students to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Dean Gerhard Loewenberg Scholarship
For the top-ranking alternate in the Presidential Scholarship competition who is majoring in College of Liberal Arts and Sciences programs only (see Presidential Scholarship details higher on this page).

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Excellence Award
For selected Old Gold Scholars with majors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences only (see Old Gold Scholarship details higher on this page).

Iowa Scholars Award
For entering first-year students who are Iowa residents with an ACT composite score of 27 or above (or a combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1210 or above) AND a cumulative high school GPA of 3.80 or above on a 4.00 scale; or
an ACT composite score of 30 or above (or a combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1330 or above) AND a cumulative high school GPA of  3.70 or above on a 4.00 scale.

  • Value: $1,000
  • One-time award for first-year students
  • Eligible students are considered automatically upon admission.

Engineering@Iowa Scholars Award
For entering first-year students majoring in engineering who are Iowa residents with
an ACT composite score of 27 or above (or a combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1210 or above) AND a cumulative high school GPA of 3.80 or above on a 4.00 scale; or an ACT composite score of 30 or above (or a combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1330 or above) AND a cumulative high school GPA of  3.70 or above on a 4.00 scale.

  • Value: $1,000
  • One-time award for first-year engineering students
  • Eligible students are considered automatically upon admission.

National Merit Scholarship
For National Merit Scholarship Program finalists who designate The University Iowa as their first-choice institution.

  • Value: $12,000 ($3,000 a year for up to four years) through a combination of the National Merit Scholarship and the Provost’s Scholarship

Provost’s Scholarship
For students named National Hispanic Scholars or National Achievement Finalists who enroll at Iowa.

William and Effa McMeans Scholarship
For selected National Merit Scholarship Program finalists majoring in College of Liberal Arts and Sciences programs only.

University of Iowa National Scholars Award (NSA)
For entering nonresident first-year students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents with a Regent Admission Index score of 290 or above. If your high school does not rank, an ACT composite score of 26 or above (or a combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1170 or above) AND a cumulative high school GPA of 3.60 or above on a 4.00 scale are required.

  • Value: $18,800 ($4,700 a year for up to four years)
    • If tuition increases, the scholarship will increase by the same percent.

Iowa Heritage Award
For entering nonresident students who have a parent, stepparent, legal guardian, or grandparent who graduated from The University of Iowa with a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree.

Advantage Iowa Award
For first-year students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents whose enrollment will contribute to a diverse learning environment. Eligibility criteria may include one or more of the following: race/ethnic background; socioeconomic factors; whether the student is a first-generation college student (whose parents have not graduated from college); participation in a federally funded Upward Bound program.

  • Value: Award ranges from $2,000 to full undergraduate resident tuition and may be renewed for up to four years.
    • The Advantage Iowa Award may increase if the student demonstrates need through the financial aid process.
  • The award is based on merit (test scores, GPA, class rank).
  • Students are considered automatically upon admission.

Halas-Sayers Scholarship
For members of underrepresented groups (African American, Hispanic/Latino(a), American Indian, Alaskan native, native Hawaiian, or other Pacific Islander). Additional requirements are outlined below.

  • Value: The amount awarded varies depending upon other scholarships and grants received.
    • The annual cost of attending the University (as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid) will be covered.
    • The award may be renewed for up to four years.
  • Additional requirements:
    • Graduate from either a Chicago area public high school or a public high school in Iowa
    • Declare a major in applied physics, astronomy, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering (any type), environmental sciences, geoscience, mathematics, microbiology, physics, science education, speech and hearing science, or statistics
    • Requires an ACT composite score of 25 or above (or a combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1130 or above) AND a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.50 or above on a 4.00 scale.
    • Demonstrate financial need
  • The Halas-Sayers Scholarship Application* is due February 20, 2012 (extended from previously announced deadline of February 10).

Tippie Scholars Scholarships
For students who qualify for Direct Admission to the Tippie College of Business. Additional requirements are specified below.

Shoemaker-Strickler Memorial Scholarship
For chemistry or physics majors. Additional requirements are specified below.

  • Value: Equivalent to tuition, fees, and books
  • Additional requirements:
    • Requires an ACT composite score of 30 or above (a combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1330 or above) AND a cumulative high school grade-point average (GPA) of 3.80 or above on a 4.00 scale.
  • The Shoemaker-Strickler Memorial Scholarship Application for students applying for admission in fall 2012 is due February 2, 2012.
  • Up to two awards per year given to Iowa residents

Engineering Excellence Scholarship
For engineering majors who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents whose enrollment will contribute to a diverse learning environment in terms of race/ethnic background or gender. Women and students from diverse family and personal backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Successful applicants typically have a 3.70 GPA or above (on a 4.00 scale) or an ACT composite score of 28 or above (or a combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1250 or above).
