Scholarships for International First-Year Students
The University of Iowa offers several scholarships to outstanding international first-year students. Financial assistance in the form of grants, loans, or need-based aid is not available for international students.

Presidential Scholarship

  • Requires an ACT composite score of 30 or above (a combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1330 or above) and a cumulative high school grade-point average (GPA) of 3.80 or above on a 4.00 scale.
  • The Presidential Scholarship Application* for fall 2009 must be postmarked by Dec. 12, 2008.
  • Value: $52,000 ($13,000 a year for up to four years) through a combination of a $10,000 Presidential Scholarship and a $3,000 Old Gold Scholarship (below)
  • Fall 2008 Presidential Scholarship Recipients

Old Gold Scholarship

  • Up to 350 awards
  • For the top 350 applicants in the Presidential Scholarship competition
  • Value: $12,000 ($3,000 a year for up to four years)

Dean Gerhard Loewenberg Scholarship

  • One award
  • For the top-ranking College of Liberal Arts and Sciences alternate in the Presidential Scholarship competition
  • Value: $2,500 (one-time, first-year award)

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Excellence Award

  • Five awards
  • For selected Old Gold Scholars with majors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
  • Value: $2,000 (one-time award for first-year students only)

University of Iowa National Scholars Award

  • For entering nonresident and international first-year students
    • If your high school does not rank, you will be considered for the award based on your ACT composite score and your high school GPA.
  • Eligible students are considered automatically upon admission.
  • Value: $12,080 ($3,020 a year for up to four years) if entering spring 2009; $12,800 ($3,200 a year for up to four years) if entering summer 2009 or later. If tuition increases, the scholarship amount will increase by the same percent.

Iowa Heritage Award

  • For entering nonresident students who have a parent, stepparent, legal guardian, or grandparent who graduated from The University of Iowa with a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree
  • The Iowa Heritage Award Application* is due May 1 for summer session and fall semester; December 3 for spring semester.
  • Value: $6,000 ($1,500 a year for up to four years)

Engineering Excellence Scholarship

  • 100 awards
  • For engineering majors who have a 3.70 GPA (on a 4.00 scale)
    OR an ACT composite score of 28 (a combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1250) or above
  • The Engineering Excellence Scholarship application must be postmarked by Jan. 30, 2009. It will be located on the College of Engineering web site by Sept. 1, 2008.
  • Value: $1,500 (one-time award for first-year students only)

Tippie Scholars Program Scholarship

  • Up to 30 awards
  • For students who qualify for Direct Admission to the Tippie College of Business and who apply to the Tippie Scholars Program. Admission to the Tippie Scholars Program is highly competitive and based on academic merit.
  • Applications for the Tippie Scholars Program are due Feb. 1, 2009; the scholarship is awarded with admission to the program. The program application form will be located on the College of Business web site by Sept. 1, 2008.
  • Value: $1,500. The award may be renewed for the sophomore year provided eligibility requirements are met.

Shoemaker-Strickler Memorial Scholarship

  • Up to four awards
  • For chemistry or physics majors
  • Requires an ACT composite score of 30 or above (a combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1330 or above) and a cumulative high school grade-point average (GPA) of 3.80 or above on a 4.00 scale.
  • The Shoemaker-Strickler Memorial Scholarship application is due Jan. 15, 2009. It will be located on the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences web site by Sept. 1, 2008.
  • Value: Equivalent to tuition, fees, and books. The award may be renewed for up to four years.
