| Assistant
professors are instructors in the process of seeking tenure, one
of the most coveted titles in academia. At Iowa, earning tenure
is a stringent and rigorous review process in which the individual's
skills as a scholar, researcher, and instructor are evaluated for
six years.
To become
an assistant professor, the individual must show promising ability as
a teacher, hold a doctorate degree or its equivalent in the area of
study, and show promise of producing scholarly activity worthy of promotion
to a tenured faculty position.
There are
approximately 400 assistant professors in the faculty ranks at The University
of Iowa, teaching in virtually every academic area.
