Importance of finance
Finance is a great field in which to teach. It surrounds our daily lives and is important to everyone at some level. Thus, I am never at a lack of real-world examples to use as class illustrations.

Weaving theoretical and practical
I typically begin a subject by first introducing the relevant theory. Then we explore the results of academic and empirical studies that support or contradict the theory. Finally, we will develop a technique for applying the theory to solve real-world financial problems using live companies or data.

Getting to know students
I build relationships with students by making a sincere effort to get to know each one. Sometimes in large classes this can be difficult, but hopefully I convey a very low-key and approachable teaching style. I prefer that my students address me on a first-name basis. Once the barriers of authority are removed, then we can communicate as individuals. This process helps me to often learn as much from my students as they learn from me.

Making a difference
It’s an overwhelming feeling to know that you have made a significant impact on the lives of these individuals.
