Typically, a visiting professor at Iowa is someone with a high degree of expertise in a particular area who has taken a hiatus from a position in the private sector or at another university to teach one or more classes at The University of Iowa.

Visiting professors usually hold the highest degree available in their field and are attracted to the teaching positions by the level of intellectual activity in the academic departments they are visiting.

Ida Beam Visiting Professors
The Ida Beam program brings eminent scholars and scientists to campus, too, but not to teach classes. Visiting professors sponsored through this program give public lectures and meet with students and faculty.
