We're
one of the top 25 public universities in the United States, but Iowa's
success goes beyond rankings. Former Iowa students include the producers
of the HBO hit The Sopranos, the creator of the Gallup
Poll, and the gymnasts who invented the modern trampoline.
In addition,
former Iowa students have been pioneers in oceanography, fluoride use, gene
therapy, and audio recording. Others went on to lead multinational corporations,
including Exxon, Bandag, and Hon Industries.
Our distinguished
faculty has included 18 Pulitzer Prize winners, the scientist who discovered
the radiation belts surrounding the Earth, one of the nation's leading
experts in musculoskeletal joint mechanics, and the man who invented
a non-surgical
treatment for
infants born with clubfoot.
Iowa was
the first school in the nation to admit women and men on an equal
basis, the first to grant a PhD in chemical engineering to an African
American
woman, and the first to grant a degree in political science
to an African American woman. Also, the U.S. Army's first female Judge
Advocate General graduated from Iowa's College of Law.
