Keri Hornbuckle, departmental executive officer in civil and environmental engineering, sent a message to all of her students: if you’re interested in doing a science project in Cedar Rapids, give me a call. Even though it was summer and flooding made things chaotic around campus, many students answered. Hornbuckle and her students are using this unique educational opportunity to examine the chemical signatures in the soil of Iowa City’s neighbor to the north—a location no classroom could replicate.
