From Old Capitol’s gleaming gold dome at the heart of campus to General Hospital’s Gothic tower to the west, The University of Iowa’s skyline evokes a sense of place and a source of inspiration.
Since acquiring its first permanent building in 1857, the University has invested in facilities that blend function and innovation into well-designed spaces. Today Iowa boasts a distinct collection of architecture on its 1,900-acre campus, including the Greek-revival-style Pentacrest buildings and the Collegiate Gothic Quadrangle Residence Hall, the modernist Iowa Advanced Technology Laboratories and the Medical Education and Research Facility.
The buildings also reflect Iowa’s longstanding commitment to the arts: they are architecturally diverse and designed by some of the world’s most prominent architects.
The monumental buildings of the Pentacrest form the core of the University—both physically and academically. Within the limestone walls, amid Ionic columns, undergraduates learn about the fundamental liberal arts and sciences.
A tradition of innovation is reflected in recently added buildings like Art Building West. Designed by acclaimed architect Steven Holl, the building earned the American Institute of Architecture’s Institute Honor Award, one of the architecture world’s highest honors.
Other contemporary additions include the Levitt Center for University Advancement, Adler Journalism and Mass Communication Building, Pomerantz Center, and Blank Honors Center.
As new architectural landmarks emerge, the University invests in icons of its past. For example, recent renovations have enhanced the Iowa Memorial Union, Schaeffer Hall, and Kinnick Stadium.
A center for education, groundbreaking research, and creativity in the arts, The University of Iowa could not achieve such distinctions without the functional spaces and inventive designs that sustain and move its people.
