Four UI Students Performing at 2006 Dance Gala

Remarkable movement

Grace and athleticism, tradition and innovation combine Nov. 2 and 3 at Dance Gala, the premier event of the fall season for the University of Iowa Department of Dance. The event showcases the talents of one of the country’s most distinguished dance programs.

On a campus that is a center for the arts, the dance department’s 173 undergraduate and 15 graduate students benefit from abundant performance opportunities, state-of-the-art venues, skilled faculty, and frequent visits by guest artists and touring companies.

Dance Gala is one of more than a dozen opportunities on campus each year for dance students to perform, produce, and choreograph. They can also show their work in Iowa and surrounding states through the department’s touring company, Dancers in Company.

Students and audiences alike benefit from the expertise of faculty with diverse training. Their choreography and teaching is influenced by many years of professional experience, plus recent creative research in China, Africa, Central America, and Europe.

The University of Iowa brings many of the world’s best-known dance companies to perform at Hancher Auditorium. Dance students can experience these live performances, plus attend rehearsals and master’s classes, such as a recent visit by Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. And the Department of Dance guest artist program brings renowned choreographers and dancers to campus as well.

“Our students not only have opportunities to learn and grow from our distinguished faculty, but also from our selection of internationally acclaimed artists that showcase the current works in the field,” says Alan Sener, chair of the Department of Dance, which is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

These experiences lead to accomplished dance careers. Graduate students from the Department of Dance have a more than 90 percent placement rate in the field, going on to perform with dance companies and to teach at universities around the country.

Dance Gala’s Allégro will captivate audiences with a diverse set of works by faculty and guest choreographers. The dance department’s pioneering faculty and talented students promise to make the event an unforgettable experience for audiences.
