University of Iowa students, faculty, staff, and leaders—including new UI President Sally Mason—will greet visitors to the Iowa State Fair, Aug. 9-19, at an exhibit showcasing service to the state. Of course a great many Iowans already are well acquainted with the University, regardless of where they live.
From the Mississippi to the Missouri, The University of Iowa has a lasting influence on the education, health, and economic well-being of Iowa families. Thanks to creative programs and partnerships, nearly every community across the state has a direct connection to campus.
For example, the University’s Division of Continuing Education delivers undergraduate and graduate instruction via the Internet and the Iowa Communications Network, and at outreach sites in various Iowa cities. Degree and certificate options encompass liberal arts, nursing, engineering, business, and other fields.
UI expertise also enriches community life through programs like the Speakers Bureau, which provides faculty, staff, and student speakers free of charge to schools and organizations. Meanwhile, ArtsShare—recipient of a 2007 UI President’s Award for Public Engagement—brings music, dance, visual arts, and creative writing to children and adults throughout the state.
Each year, thousands of Iowans travel to Iowa City for treatment at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, the state’s only tertiary care center. But the hospital also goes to Iowans: In more than 40 communities, UI specialists collaborate with local doctors at outreach clinics.
The University is good for business, too. The IOWA Centers for Enterprise offer aid to startups and existing businesses, helping Iowa grow a creative and entrepreneurial workforce. UI research last year drew more than $382 million in external grants and contracts, which translate into purchases, jobs, and discoveries with commercial potential.
Contributions like these keep The University of Iowa—like the world-famous Iowa State Fair—a valuable and vital institution for the entire state.
