From cross-country skiing to kayaking, water polo to wildlife camps, programs offered by the University of Iowa Division of Recreational Services help people young and old to live an active lifestyle.
The division—through comprehensive facilities and equipment, skilled staff, and a wide range of fitness classes—build a healthy student body. And intramurals and club sports—from basketball to ultimate Frisbee—offer an important way to connect with each other, learn leadership skills, and have fun.
The natural environment is accessible to anyone through Touch the Earth Outdoor Recreation and Education Programs, which teach outdoor activities and sponsor excursions around the country. In addition, the Touch the Earth Outdoor Rental Center allows the public to create their own adventures by renting tents, sleeping bags, or other outdoor gear.
Throughout the year, area schoolchildren learn to love the natural world through hands-on activities offered through a host of youth outdoor programs, including summer wildlife camps at Macbride Nature Recreation Area nearby and the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory in northwest Iowa. Staff from the Macbride Raptor Project also travel to local schools and organizations to teach appreciation of Iowa’s native birds of prey.
Such a broad range of activities wouldn’t be possible without outstanding facilities and equipment. In 2006, the new Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex opened, featuring eight indoor and 12 outdoor tennis courts, a 3,000-square-foot fitness area, and the Touch the Earth Outdoor Rental Center. And construction recently began on the new Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, a comprehensive, student-centered facility that will be built on the east side of campus.
The programs, activities, and services offered by the Division of Recreational Services educate, energize, and improve the health and wellness of the entire University community.
