UI Campus Facilities Accessibility Progress!
- LGBT-RC Accessible Bathroom
The Lesbian Gay Bisexual & Transgender Resource Center now has an accessible bathroom on the main floor. Before, there was a "janitor style" toilet located at the top of the basement entry stairway within a closet.
- LGBT-RC New Accessible Pedestrian Route
The Lesbian Gay Bisexual & Transgender Resource Center now has an accessible pedestrian route available to access the facility. A short section of concrete sidewalk was installed to connect the driveway with the walkway on the north side of the Gerdin Athletic Learning Center. Accessible parking is located nearby to the west. An accessible restroom was installed earlier in the year.
- Medical Research Center - Elevator Upgrade
Facilities Management recently completed an elevator upgrade at the Medical Research Center. Accessibility upgrades included raised call buttons, visible and audible hall signals, verbal annunciation, accessible car control floor designation buttons, and emergency two-way communication system with tactile symbols and characters.
- Bowen Science Building South Entrance Plaza - New Ramp
A concrete ramp has been installed at the Bowen Science Building south entrance plaza. Individuals using wheeled mobility devices now have available to them a route which connects the east and west campus via the Bowen Science Building and this ramp.
- MERF - Hearing Loop Installed in Room 1110A
The College of Medicine recently installed a hearing loop system in the Medical Education Research Facility room 1110A (Prem Sahai Auditorium). A hearing loop system consists of a copper wire installed in the ceiling or floor of a room, and that wire sends audio – like that from a professor wearing a microphone – directly to a hearing aid or cochlear implant in the room.
- Quad Ravine
Facilities Management is nearing completion of a repair and improvement project at the Quad Ravine. These improvements now offer a pedestrian route without stairs connecting the East Campus to the Health Sciences/UIHC Campus. Several stretches of sidewalk have been realigned and replaced. Select stairs have been replaced and handrails added. A section of stairs which connected the Quad Ravine to the plaza on the southeast side of the Bowen Science Building have been eliminated and replaced with an ADA compliant ramp. An additional ramp was constructed at the Bowen Science Building plaza entrance doors that allows for wheelchair access into the building at this access point. Upon entering the building, one can navigate to other buildings and sites on campus by means of the building elevators and tunnel system.
- MacLean Hall Restroom Renovation
Facilities Management recently completed the renovation of all four restrooms in MacLean Hall. All four restrooms are now completely accessible. A partial list of the improvements include new wheelchair accessible toilet compartment stalls, accessible lavatories and faucets, lowered mirror heights, and accessible toilet fixtures. Adequate turning space along with appropriate approach and maneuvering clearances was an integral part of the design. Floor, wall, and ceiling finishes were also upgraded in several of the rooms.
- North Hall Elevator Upgrade
The elevator in North Hall has been modernized and upgraded for accessibility. Accessibility upgrades included raised call buttons, visible and audible hall signals, verbal annunciation, accessible car control floor designation buttons, and emergency two-way communication system with tactile symbols and characters.
- Calvin Hall Elevator Upgrade
The elevator in Calvin Hall has been modernized and upgraded for accessibility. Accessibility upgrades included raised call buttons, visible and audible hall signals, verbal annunciation, accessible car control floor designation buttons, and emergency two-way communication system with tactile symbols and characters.
- Schaeffer Hall Exterior Path
The exterior steps located at the southeast corner of Schaeffer Hall have been eliminated and replaced with a sloped sidewalk.
- Riverside Recital Hall
Various accessibility upgrades were accomplished late last fall at the Riverside Recital Hall site. Pedestrian access from the parking lots was enhanced to improve safety and allow for a stable walking surface. Sidewalks were extended and added in order to alleviate the need for pedestrians to walk in the street and drives to access the building entrances. Additional accessible parking stalls were added. Exterior lighting levels were increased to enhance visibility and safety. Before

As part of a project to address accessibility and life-safety deficiencies in the Chemistry Building, nine stair enclosures and fifteen restrooms have been modified to improve accessibility. The stair enclosures included modifications to doors, handrails and guardrails. Alterations to the restrooms included the entrances, accessible fixtures, wheelchair accessible toilet stalls and other modifications to improve accessibility within the rooms. Drinking fountains have been upgraded from a single fountain to dual height fountains.

- Bowen Science Building - West Entrance
The Bowen Science Building wheelchair ramp located at the West entrance has been completely redone.
- Bowen Science Building - Cane Detection Guardrail
A cane detection guardrail was installed under the concrete stairs at Bowen Science Building to prevent injury of individuals with sight impairments.
- Calvin Hall – Renovate West and South Entrances
The west entry of Calvin Hall is a primary public entry for the Registrar’s Service Center and the only accessible entry for the building. Since this west entry is used for service and delivery access, the existing condition is confusing and un-inviting. The existing service access system is directly outside the door, with adjacent stairs that do not have handrails. The accessible route from the south is narrow with a sloping sidewalk system.
Improvements include a public accessible route that is distinguishable from the service/delivery route. Though the service route is adjacent to the public entry; the public entry is emphasized with a larger court area and accessed by a new curving slope sidewalk and ramp system from the south. Directional signage from the adjacent parking ramp and other sides of the building will be included.
The south entry monumental stair has been removed and replaced including new metal guards (rails) and handrails. The new stair has a deeper top landing.
- Theatre Building - Main Entrance
The Theatre Building main entrance received a power door operator that now allows individuals with disabilities to easier navigate in and out of the facility.
- Calvin Hall – Renovate Restrooms
This project includes full renovation of the ground/basement, first, and second floor restrooms to be ADA compliant. A Women's restroom will be added to the Ground Floor which will also include a Lactation room.
- Music West Interim Building - Main Entrance
