Joy Elizabeth Hayes

History of Broadcasting
Cultural Studies

Joy studies the cultural history of broadcasting in the United States and Mexico.  She has published on radio and the construction of post-revolutionary nationalism in Mexico, and her current research explores the way that community radio can thicken civil society and realign local, national and transnational interests in the Mexican public sphere.  Her recent work on U.S. radio examines the performance of white, middle-class family life in the serial One Man’s Family, and investigates the role of regional radio networks in imagining the modern Southwest.  She is also working on a project on memories of the 1938 War of the Worlds radio broadcast, and exploring how the iconic broadcast can be used as a tool for teaching Golden Age radio history. Her course offerings at the graduate level include the Cultural History of Radio, Latin American Media, Nationalism as a Communication Process, and Theories of Mass Communication.
