Jiyeon Kang’s research focuses on discursive practices of national identity, civic use of the Internet, globalization, South Korean youth and politics, and theories of the public and rhetorical agency. She is particularly interested in contemporary forms of nationalism and patriotism, which often take the form of protests against a perceived unequal global power arrangement. Her interests also include viewing how the Internet serves as a scene for such citizenry practices—termed “netizenship” and characterized by its low cost of participation, partial anonymity, distinct styles of discourse, and fast-paced dissemination of information.
