You will be notified via email each semester regarding Registration Clearance Information!

Two Course Limit during Early Registration
Communication Studies majors can register for only TWO (2) Communication Studies courses during Early Registration.  This process allows all majors to have an opportunity to take courses in the major.

  • Register for two (2) communication courses if you have the prerequisites – including 2.6 overall GPA!
  • Register for other courses up to 16 semester hours during early registration
  • Register for additional communication courses during the three (3) days after early registration ends.

Prerequisites

It’s important to read the course description and prerequisite information available on ISIS.  Students should register only for the courses for which prerequisites have been met and are needed to satisfy major requirements.

If you DO NOT meet the required prerequistes, you WILL BE ADMISTRATIVELY DROPPED!

Codes on ISIS

D-Codes – Majors only
During Early Registration, the department puts a D-code on most 036 courses on ISIS and the D-code restricts registration to only officially declared Communication Studies majors.  Non-majors are required to wait for the “D” code to be removed from the desired 036 course before they can register.  D-codes are automatically removed from 036 communication courses on the fourth working day after early registration ends.

X-Codes – Special Permission
Whenever an X-code is in the Spe column on ISIS, special permission is required before a student can register for the course.  In most cases when an X-code restricts a communication course, specific prerequisites must be met first.

H-Codes – Honors Section
The H-code indicates the section is reserved for honors students.  Students must either be in honors or have a UI GPA of 3.33 or higher at the time of registration.  The Department will automatically and administratively change the section of any student who does not have the required 3.33 UI GPA in the honors section.

Closed Classes/Sections

The Communication Studies Department does not maintain waitlists for closed courses. Students should continually check ISIS for openings. In some cases, a student’s only choice will be to select an alternative course.

Add/Drop Forms

After classes start, students must use an Add or Drop form to make changes to their schedule.  Forms are available on the ISIS log-in page and should be completed with the course information including the section number.

Communication Studies faculty and teaching assistants do not have the ability to add students to their classes, students should refrain from emailing Communication Studies faculty or teaching assistants to request to be added to a course or section.

To add or drop Communication Studies courses, students need to obtain appropriate signatures from the Academic Counselor in Room 162 or the Department Administrator in Room 105 BCSB.
