List any other communication methods that are important to you:

Being able to sync my mail, calendar, etc. with my handheld.
Cell Phone
telnet
Blue mail is evil, it just confuses me I can't figure it out. What is wrong with webmail, keep webmail, destroy blue main.
Exchange Server option
Remote access - such as an owa website setup with a microsoft exchange server
Skype
I would like to be able to use mail programs such as Microsoft Outlook or Apple's Mail
Instead of IMAP use pop3
verbal communication via cell phones
ability to copy/paste....I do not see how that is done on the current Webmail. I generally prefer Eudora for the following reasons: ability to type off-line never totally deletes my mail if I accidentally hit the wrong button. ability to copy/paste overall more user friendly than Webmail
NEED MORE SPACE IN MAIL BOX
Whatever is the most cost efficient should be of the highest priority as we already pay a lot of money for tuition. Keeping costs low is key, email is the only essential function, the rest of the options would only be "nice" definately not needed.
email - good old basic email
regular email
cellphone for voice communication, VOIP telephony, computer link to cellphone for dial-up internet access while traveling
The use of an off-line e-mail program like Eudora or Microsoft Outlook is important to me so that I dont need to log onto the internet every time, but rather can just have a program open throughout the day. A program similar to Outlook would be nice to have with a calander function as well as e-mail.
phone, email
plain old email is extremely important
It would be nice if there could be more space availabe to store important messages.
It would be nice to have a student phonebook to look up other students and/or important numbers in the surrounding areas.
All the stuff above is just silly toys - give me more email storage, period. That is the lamest aspect of IT svcs at UI - 10megs is pathetic, and I had to get special permission for a bump up from 5megs. At LSU they gave us 50 by default - you should talk to them, they're good at what they do.
easy to use!!! lots of storage space.
Being able to change font and spell check would be nice
Server-side ASP, PHP, and CGI capabilities on student space for testing scripts, database work, etc. Also, on 1(b), there's no option for just normal "email."
I would like to see a calendar included. Until recently I used Office 2003 and it was extremely nice to have a calendar available within my e-mail service. Having all of my contacts within one-click is very important as well.
MORE STORAGE SPACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
writing letters, talking on the phone
none
Stop the Spam
way more space to store email
I would like for webmail to work in Outlook Express so I can save emails on my home computer and take them off the school's server. That way I won't lose anything important.
cell phone
Large amounts of data storage and tranferability. We submit documents to almost all journals via email, and it is not uncommon to have gigabytes of data you know!!!
larger memory capacity
The Facebook
I do not want anything to do with the way the healthcare email is setup using Microsoft Outlook. It sucks and doesn't work well with email clients like Eudora and MacMail.....
PLEASE, organze isis and webmail and icon INTO one combined access
Glass of foam-mediated
One central site for info!!! I hate that different professors in different courses had all kinds of websites to use. There should be one main site.
Other email accounts. I would like to forward my Iowa account to others.
I talk to people face-to-face!
im guessing facebook falls under the category of webpages??
More space for mail.
more storage space in email. being able to send larger files
Asian Characters are difficult to use with the current email system.
video conferencing / voip
Regular Phone
A moderated bulletin board for all faculty, staff, and students.
More storage!!! I had to switch to another provider b/c my storage was too small
I have problems with the spam blacklisting option. Every time I try to blacklist, I get a message saying "fatal error..."
internet chatting
The only problem I have with the current email is that the there is not enough storage space. If the size was larger I would be very pleased with the uiowa email system.
I am a grad student and a GSS student senator and I only have 5MB of email memory. This SERIOUSLY needs to be rectified. IT is simply not enough.
Fax
Phone
Talking Letters Phone calls
Return receipt feature should be upgraded but KEPT!
i think ICON is already a good step above having two seperate programs (blackboard and the other one), and getting at least links to all class websites through ICON should be essential, since a few of my courses always seem to be hosted in obscure places that i can't find by searching
I have gradually ben moving over to gmail because I like the threadbuilder. even without the searchability i think their thread builder is great.
The ability for Teachers and TA's to conduct students at all times through E-mail
Switch over from the web-based system to Outlook (keep web based for remote access), and give more than ten MB of space. I worked IT tech support at my old school (U of WI - Stevens Point) which had ~8000 students and one of the lowest tuitions in the state, yet each student had 1 Gig of space. 10 MB is a joke.
Think Google's GMail.
email, phone
synchronize tasks, calendar, and notes between my personal computer and the university system. Not contacts though.
1-More storage space for my emails is vital. With 5 MB of storage, I cannot file any of my emails. 2-Regardless of scheduling abilitiy with students and staff, I would like a built in calendar where I can keep track of my own schedule.
face-to-face
the ability to insert graphics, and text in the main body of the e-mail so there is no risk of viruses
the most important communication method i would want is a web page displaying all class cancellations- a centralized placewhere the instructor calls to annouce that class will not meet. I would also be interested in this web page displaying all university activities, such as lecutes, sports, etc.
no spam
more space on our email. if i recieve large emails, i do not have enough space to delete them and it causes a lot of trouble. it is unfair that liberal arts students get less space then other colleges.
I have liked being able to ask a librarian for information or help online, so a link in whatever setup is made would be nice, because it is difficult to find the link easily. At other universities there is a feature on the "ICON" like systems called PAGE where you can easily contact people in that specific class to setup group projects or talk about grades. The nice part is the information is already there and you chose the reciepients from a clss list. This eliminates the teacher giving a class email list--which can be a liability. I would like to see a PAGE like feature in the system too.
want the ability to continue accessing email via webmail or some other web-based tool
Organizational websites for which I am responsible, including forms on those websites
Larger email capacity.
Voice over IP; Audio Mail; Video Mail.
Talking
Phone calls
Just so it is not 100% Webmail! It should have POP or IMAP access
none
If texting is used, be able to limit or block unwanted users
More storage space for emails.
Face to face.
Any system must have compatibility with MacIntosh computers and the Safari Browser. Those of us who are Mac users need to be considered in any changes.
Talking
a schedule/calender on web site that color codes (etc.) and allows people to clearly see their schedule, helpful if one doesnt have their written schedule/calender with them at a computer and one wants to check for a time or place quickly.
face to face talk
Forums
Video/Voice over IP calls.
Video Chat, Voice chat/IP connect.
Bulletin boards for courses or departments might be a good idea.
messaging on facebook.com
remote access, networking
cell phone calling telephone
none
EXTRA STORAGE FOR E-MAILS?? 5 MEGS? GOOGLE HAS OVER A GIG. IN THE WORDS OF ANYONE I'VE TOLD ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF SPACE ON BLUE FOR EMAILS, 'ROFL.'
More room for email addresses when trying to send mass emails for organizations without the list-serve
smoke signals
This survey seems to have addressed most of the features that I'm interested in having added to an integrated email system.
face to face interaction
e-mail
The E-mail interface could be vsatly updated. It is so bulky.
file sharing
Enough storage space where I wouldn't have to delete messages that are nearing "oldness" I'd like enough space to store important emails.
E-mail (of course)
I think we need to increase the e-mail storage larger than 5mb per student. That is the main reason why I do not use our blue account with the University.
ability to auto-foward email sent within exchange to other email servers.
H: drive access that's quicker, while email and that sort is good, SPACE is the biggest concern (maybe implement use of H: drive for email, then again, you probably offer this already). I use GMAIL because of the space I get and it's exceptonal spam filtering, thus I don't have much experience with the current university email system.
Please resolve the situation of different domains!!! Even though I no longer work for the University hospital and am now a student, I have had a terrrible time getting my e-mails to the right address!!!
Land Lines, p.o. boxes
Messenger pigeon, two cups and a string, smoke signals, the Pony Express and telepathy
I already use the above features.
larger e-mail space
The most important thing for me is that it can be downloaded into Outlook. I do not like the current method, so I forward emails to gmail.
Blocking or filtering spam so that it does not fill my mailbox and then I am unable to receive other messages
RSS feeds, lectures via podcasts
Collaborative websites, such as wikis.
The Faculty/Staff scheduling is absolutely crucial. If you have a very busy advisor, this would be incredibly useful!!!!!!!!
I don't like have to change my password every semester.
none

List other features or services that are important to you:

store "sent-mail" more storage room available with automatic encryption
There is not nearly enough space allocation for 1 student. 5mb for a personal webpage and e-mail is ridiculous. If someone sends me an e-mail with 2 large pictures, I have to struggle to simply delete them! The idea of being able to host a webpage with that space is a joke. University of Illinois provides 15mb for e-mail and 100mb for a webspace. I realize that's a very generous amount of space, but even a third of that would be more reasonable!
PGP/GPG
I would like to be able to flag emails so that I can't accidentally delete them.
can't think right now, too many tests, come on with the homework
i think students should get to keep their email address after they graduate
Larger email space on the server
POP3 access... this isn't available everywhere.
Plenty of space in my inbox. Im always running out of space for larger e-mails/pictures.
Skype availabe in ITC's.
Having a larger amount of space. IE More than 5 megs.
ability to opt-out of mass e-mailings from academic and non-academic student organizations
More Storage Space!!!!
again, don't get hypnotized by toys, stay focused, serious: everyone knows email isn't secure - you can't afford to make it secure.
More important than anything listed above is POP3 compliance.
I really want to emphasize the Message Recall ability. That would be outstandingly great to have.
none
I had no problem with the e-mail service for the past four years, until this year when you decided to start spamming constantly. It is really unneccessary.
the online system should have outlook features
way more space needed to store email messages
Archiving, so I don't have to delete things if I don't want to.
powerful email list-making tool, like drag-and-drop stuff. (lots of javascript!)
Please fix the useless/dysfunctional "spam blocker" and "blacklist" aspect of the current email system.
Note, We need large amounts of space for storage and delivery. Almost all prominent journals require electronic submission of papers including all data that goes with them. Also note that any desire for "Email Routing" is an artificial one because people had to use other email sources such as yahoo in order to have storage space. This was actually a hinderance to them for the most part because they were obviously using the email for the purposes of university related agendas as evidenced by the address being given as *@uiowa.edu.
outgoing mail server for students that live off campus not using university based internet, specifically people who have quest DSL which doesnt have an outgoing mail server
Being able to import address lists or address books from other accounts or web sources.
Having more memory space in my e-mail account
Large Mailbox (way more than 10 MB!!!)
SPACE!!!! 5mb is nothing, especially with emailing files between students and professors. I can keep about 3 days worth of email before I have to delete everything to keep under the quota. Gmail give 2GB, others are similar, why only 5 Mb?
It would be nice to have a "recently deleted" folder like AOL
Spam filtering is #1 I think UI email SUCKS at this, I can't even black-list my spam any more Also want to have option NOT to have to be bothered with all the UI clubs - if I want to join scuba club, or knitting club - I'll look them up (thanks, I feel better... :) )
Calendar import/export capability
I would like to be able to blacklist places that send me spam email. The blacklist link has not worked for a long time. I would also appreciate if sections of my emails were no longer "considered potentially dangerous" and automatically deleted. If I don't know the person sending me the email I won't open it. I don't need webmail to decide what is safe for my computer to open.
Account sustainability/redirection. If past students were allowed to retain their email accounts or at least an email redirection alias under an "alumni.uiowa.edu" subdomain.
More space on the account
spyware
More than 5 MB free space--I use my university email account for my job at SCOPE Productions, and not being able to receive pictures and files is detrimental to my job.
Easy to use email address book... still haven't figured out an easy way to use the one on Blue.
MESSAGE RECALL!!!!!
The spam blocker is not enough for me. I get tons of spam. Please try to improve upon this system. I've tried to blacklist, but it doesn't seem to stop the same emails from coming again and again.
sorry to keep extolling gmail. I am actually using gmail for some correspondence with students because I like it better than uiowa webmail. so I will send their grades to their uiowa account. but for day to day stuff i would prefer to use gmail. also my webmail account is full of stuff i am hoarding--the disk quota is maxed out.
Having more space on email. There is not enough room for large emails!!
Password protection, virus protection.
spam control, spam control, spam control....
unlimited blacklisting
no spam
I enjoy being able to archive messages, so it would be nice to have more space. I like blocking senders that get my info from a list, and wish it were more active at deleeting them.
A more intuitive and useful file sorting and viewing system.
faster connection and better performance are keys
Access to my e-mail ANYWHERE in the world from a computer/handheld.
E-mail routing is EXTREMELY important.
Just so it is not 100% Webmail! It should have POP or IMAP access
none
Keeping the same e-mail address after graduation!!!
i'd like a much bigger mailbox!
filtering automatically into folders(like Google email filtering of emails into user-made folders)
use of different fonts, colors, and bolding
More ui email storage space
Again, Mac compatibility is crucial
E-mail storage space
Ability to use a program such as Outlook directly through the university account, with out fowarding to another email address. POP3/SMTP access.
Spell Checker, message recall is nice.
SERIOUSLY, 5 MEGS? IT CAN'T BE THAT HARD TO BUY A COUPLE HARDDRIVES.
Large quota size.
pop3 support
Clean up the E-mail interface. The interface of Gmail for example is very clean and easy to use, and has massive storage capacity.
linking to outlook
It would be nice to be able to have a routing address for e-mail but still be able to use Blue as a Unix server (like it used to be).
The routing has trouble for me currently. Some email doesn't get routed and I have a hrd time relying on the routing feature (I am currently testing it with my GMAIL account)
I'd like a service that allows me to get OFF a mailing list without informing me that the email address I am using doesn't match up with one in their system because the email address I use is a routing one. Or at least an easier service because I'm still on lists I don't want to be on. Fix that.
The ability to use different fonts and colors.
more storage! I use gmail because there is no way I can live on 5 mb.
Downloading to outlook, in the alternative forwarding to another account.
Increasing quota
Shell account access to email through ssh; Secure IMAP server for checking email; Signed SSL certificates for web-based email.
Emphasis on email routing because I strongly dislike the school email system.
I feel that Email routing is important now because the email system isn't very good and has very limited space. but if the email system were to improve then Routing wouldn't be as important to me.
I don't like having to change my password every semester
none
It'd be nice to have POP3 access to webmail that actually works. :)

Scheduling is more inportant than e-mail.
All of these would be great, I find I don't use my planner, and never have, but am on my computer a lot, so this would definitely help A TON. GREAT IDEA
Online calendars are a PITA, and keeping two calendars is two PITAs.
schedule is good i likey
If you actually do all that stuff above that would be a huge relief of hassel in my day
I think this type of tracking program would be very useful. Also, the idea of online scheduling is very appealing. These are the types of things I would like to see; something like an online assignment book, we are on our computers so much, that is easy to look stuff up, and we wouldn't have to worry about always having it with us.
While some of these features might be nice, I honestly don't see myself using them. They seem most useful for someone connected all the time (as opposed to someone who uses dial-up or a shared computer).
An online/computer personal calendar would be really nice to have.
we're already so beholden to these machines, i'd like to avoid having a system where people can schedule meetings with me without my knowledge - more sites to check and be responsible for. TURNING IT OFF is sometimes my only relief!
I do not feel that online calendars are secure, so I would not use this service.
Should be able to handshake with Palm (and other providers') software/hardware.
I already use outlook, and I wouldn't change
none
syncronize with online systems such as Plaxo
It would be very useful to have integration and sync abilities with MS Outlook.
Halfway decent spell check would be nice. The current one is clumsy and 1/2 the time it makes me lose my email.
There is the potential for these to come candy coated with the courses they sign up for!!! i.e. they could download their class scheduals in such format from isis--potentially.
platform independence with searching emails/contacts and spellcheck is very important to me.
As long as it is NOT an online program it will be ok.
Have it since with a PALM PILOT, have the University get a deal with PALM and recieve them cheaper for UI students and have all rubrics and such sync to your palm pilot. I know exactly how this should work and it will be the wave of the future, there's no reason Iowa can't be the first school with this.
isis and webmail
i use outlook, and being able to import syllabus information would be awesome, hopefully at least schedules could be downloaded. i think it's easy and nice to have to contact someone to schedule a meeting, i think professors probably have enough to do already without keeping their schedules up to date by the hour.
ISIS is sufficient for services regarding schedules and necessary outlook for requirements needed.
Keep track of significant deadlines and birthdays.
accessibility away from the computer---reason why I don't use it now
import and view official / academic events and academic calendars; import and view my class schedule
It would be nice to have all of the academic calendars in one large calendar that I can include my schedule and personal appts. on. Alarms and reminders would be terrific.
status/away messages of staff/faculty
integration with email services
import and view UIHC/student health appointments
The ability to export the calendar information to a Palm Pilot or other PDA type device is very important to me.
Synching(sp?) with handheld (palm pilot) device. Color coding options for different activities/people in family (etc.)
Paper calendars are more flexible.
Just so it is not 100% Webmail! It should have POP or IMAP access
none
Again, compatibility with Mac is important - specifically with the computer iCal
The option to sign up for other University services. In the cinema department, for example, students have to sign up by hand for hours to do video editing in the video lab, or to sign up to check out equipment from our equipment pool. It would be great if this or similar kinds of calendar-based sign up functions could be built into a calendar system.
ablity to see friends/prof's/TA calenders abilty to set private events in calender and/or set an event so only friends see it or only the prof group not the friends/ and to automaticly share my/prof's/TA class scheual with a class or just the prof's/TA's. Abitly like with exchange server to sent a request/invite to meatings would be great for schualing Acidemic Advising
The average unformatted digital camera image is about 1 megabyte.
Scheduling with colleagues and others within the university.
I didn't know the University wanted to become another Microsoft Outlook 2003?! (joke)
Online banking and bill paying. I'm proud that I recommended we be able to pay our UBill online- that's huge.
ability to add extra stuff to calander - work schedules, random schedules, etc. AND the ability to let others view my schedule at a special url!
I already use the above features.
interoperability via MS, ipod, etc for formats.
It would be great if students had accounts on the Exchange server and were listed in the GAL.
none
To schedule appointments, it'd be nice if you didn't lock us into using something web-based. There are some open standards for requesting appointments (I think it involves emails with special attachments), aren't there?

No "Official" Spam please, it's still spam if I don't ask for it, and most of it I don't and can't stop.
text
calling people the old fashioned way, the purpose of a cell phone for crying out loud
No PDA or Cell phone for me.
a student discount on a good Windows CE PDA
Don't waste my time, I have WORK to do! I don't want MORE bombardment!
none
I would not like the University to text message me.
Nothing. Stop proposing ideas that will ring up charges on my bloody cell phone!
Text messaging via elected subscription for game times and other times and places of select university events. I wouldn't want irrelevant emails from Scorton for example!!! But I always want to know when the baseball games are and have yet to find out on time even once. Plus, this could solve the problem of football tickes with TBA instead of any useful info!!! Maybe there could be a way that we could go to a page and sign up to get the categories of notices of our choice.
platform independence with searching emails/contacts and spellcheck is very important to me.
Access to the h:/ drive is a major biggie. Thanks so much! You could double or triple the 100 MB. I advise all incoming students to get a yahoo account, give themselves their hawk i.d.'s and step up to one gig of free storage. What a great deal! There's no way that the UI could compete with that. So, I recommend that you save the students some fees and encourage the use of outside & parallel services, such as storage. I use my h:/ drive for numbered folder (such as 010:001 rhetoric 1) to file all my academic papers. For backup, I use and update my 256 MB thumb drive. Instant Messaging can be beat by simply picking up the phone. I mean, who in the world would want to type when talking is so much easier?
Receiving official University messages as text messages is a BAD idea.
I DO NOT want to receive official university stuff on my phone
aim messaging
I would elect to receive official University messages as text messages only if there were no text messaging fees to my cell phone bill by my service provider.
the e-mail program should be as lite as possible, but these might be more popular in the next few years so they might be worth having. i don't see using them but that type of technology is developing quickly.
no such device
e-mail
using a keyboard that is arranged and portable to place for speed and accuracy and comfort
Synchronizing my PDA with my home calendar/computer as well as my school one.
My phone predates these things.
Just so it is not 100% Webmail! It should have POP or IMAP access
none
This may be good for faculty, but I do not want any of these options as a student
a group/student discount for devices threw ITS get good solid PDA phone's like Samsung SCH-i730 or a BlacBerry for a decent price like $150-250. if the servcie is there thats great but with out a aforable quality device to use it with waist of time another option is wi-fi enable PDA's with support for campus wi-fi network
Cancellations would be okay for Official text messages, BUT NOTHING ELSE. Also, 5 megs of storage for e-mail? Who's the ad wizard that came up with THAT one?
I'm a doctoral student, finished with classes and I travel alot; I don't even have a landline so ANYTHING that increases my mobile productivity is good!
Get wireless for Palm Tungsten C back! Twist Meetinghouse's proverbial arm to get them to add PEAP to the Aegis Client for Tungsten C.
I use my phone's browser frequently. Having access to University web based services on my cell phone would be VERY handy.
The alarm feature and text messaging. Text messaging is extremely important to me.
You guys can't get message happy with our cell phone numbers. I would rather have no cell phone communication from the university if my number is going to be abused (including being given out to ANY outside party).
create an rss feed for all of this that could be subscribed to. create a reader that could be used for java/brew phones if not able to be used via online web reader such as bloglines, google reader
none

6) Comments:

I would feel more comfortable being able to choose my own IM username - even if I then never had the option to change it.
Faculty, Staff, and Students should all be on the same email system.
There are enough IMing programs out there, why does the UI need its own?
Another good idea, lots of kids would like this I think
I sincerely and strongly do not want people to be able to contact me via my hawkid
At University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the library reference desk used regular AOL Instant Messenger, and students could ask questions about how to use the libraries, availability, etc. I think this would be a better allocation of resources than creating a University IM system.
Give us more mail queue space. 5 MB is NOT enough!!!!!
Having multiple channels of communication does not necessarily facilitate communication.
good way to pick up chicks
get outlook express webmail. This current system is way outdated and sucks.
UI does not need to provie instant messenging, the market for im clients is already saturated
I would like to communicate easily with staff members but I also feel like even if this option was available staff members might find it as too informal and not allow the use of it for common questions or scheduling appointments.
there really needs to be a better spam filter because my email is full of crap and the filters just let me know what was blocked but doesnt stop it all
Most people would probably prefer to just continue using AOL and MSN rather than adding an additional program.
Security is one of the biggest concerns of mine. Spam blocking, virus and spyware protection, etc. I would sacrifice a lot of other stuff for really good security on my email and other communications!
It would actually be really useful if the university had a Jabber server.
I didn't pick my hawkID, I was assigned my ID and I don't like my ID.
IM kills student/faculty productivity, wastes time, and poses a serious security threat that is currently UNRESOLVABLE: the costs far outweigh the benefits, the University should avoid getting involved with this dangerous, useless gimmick.
The only instant messaging that I use related to university functions is the library's live reference. For this and to connect with ITS I feel are most useful for students.
I would like the username to be something that is not just our last name and first innitial (hawkID), but our first name too.
I don't currently use IM to communicate with very many University people, so having a separate IM system for the University would not be very useful to me--most people I talk to would still be reachable only through AIM.
I think it would be a better solution to integrate with a preexisting service (MSN, Yahoo, etc) than to create *yet another* non-interoperable protocol/service.
MORE SPACE. I NEED MORE SPACE IN MY EMAIL ACCOUNT.
More storage space in our email.
Is an IM really all that necessary given the prevalence of commercial products? Are you thinking of offering an IM client that allows a person to connect to the four major IM networks (ICQ, AIM, MSN, YIM) or would it be limited to just U of I students? If it is the latter, then I don't think anyone would use it.
University instant message is a nice idea on paper, but would be very impractical. If students use instant messaging, they already have the software. If Iowa introduced a messaging service it wouldn't be used since it is so far behind from AIM and Windows Messenger.
I already have enough messageing services.
none
There are too many different IM offerings. A central service that allowed communication with people on a number of services would be best.
I'm a GIS student with no cell phone, so I put "neutral" on a lot of questions that I thought I shouldn't vote for because I don't have that technology or need (i.e., meeting with other students on campus).
Having a way to contact Faculty other than email would be useful, but how likely are they to use/check it more often or even as often as their email?
I would use it, but only for IT help or for library help.
I would strongly like to see our HawkID be the first part of our email addresses. i.e. hawkid@uiowa.edu. Also, I am strongly opposed to any advertising or other likeness in the emails or the programs themselves.
[off topic] This is a poorly designed survey from a statistical point of view. Very poorly worded questions and categories.
Yeah, can we please get a choice of some form regarding our hawk ID? I hate having my last name terminated prematurely!!!!
As a TA I think it's really important for students to be able to contact me but I fear that with cell phones and IM, they may pressure me to let them contact me unnecessarily or at inappropriate times. 24 hr access is not necessary and I feel would impinge on my privacy. It would also be nice to have a centralized place where all the departments can list their deptmental colloquia or presentations- right now, it's hard to find out that info on the web.
I believe this could potentially be very useful.
I think you are going 'way over the top. Most students who want something sexy & cool already pay for it. I loved Unix, pine, & pico minus all the fancy stuff.
i would still use my AIM in addition, probably more often and as my primary service
I didn't really know where else to put this, but it would REALLY be great to have more account space. I don't know what the plans are, but currently 5MB isn't even worth using the email system.
Having the change my password so frequently is a huge hassle, I have trouble remembering it each time and would like to have the option to keep it the same if i am not worried about eminent security problems.
For the love of all the gods, PLEASE increase our email capacity. 5 MB of storage is a frickin' joke, especially when students are emailing me papers. My Hotmail and Gmail accounts both have 2 GB of space and even the University of Texas (which also uses Webmail) has 100 MB. Seriously, this is ridiculous.
Most of the people I talk to on IM are at other schools, so this would only benefit me if it weren't UI-specific.
Uni IM'ing would really be a useful way of allowing students and teachers to get urgent information to each other quickly.
you use your hawkID for so many password type instances having it easily identifable/accessable would make getting into your personal sites eaiser
I would only use IM if I could be confident the university would not invade my privacy by monitoring messages.
I love instant messaging! I wish it were more available on campus.
i THINK an instant messaging service through the U of I would be awesome!! aND VERY HELPFUL
I would probably be more interested in some of the features listed above, but really don't have time to learn how to use them. I'm rarely on campus to seek out help.
I would suggest a way to incorporate popular commercial instant messaging services into a university-provided application, allowing cross-platform messaging between myself and AOL, MSN, or other popular service users.
It seems like there are enough compatble instant messaging systems in place already. Faculty and Staff should just join these existing systems and make their screennames available to those concerned.
the major problem with all of these services is the fact that once we are no longer students we lose all contacts whether they be in our email, or IM or any other service you may provide. So we would be better off making and keeping contacts through some non-university provider so we can keep them long after we are done here.
I am extremely concerned about the potential of converting all scheduling to an online system. Already as it is, many university departments do little to respond to student needs. I fear that online scheduling may reduce student interaction even more, as a tradeoff to increasing efficiency.
Awesome idea!
if the name "blue" could be kept as part of the deal, that would be awesome, i just like it. also "weeg", cause i've been around it from the start and it kinda feels cozy.
It would be great if there was some way to incorporate the University provided instant messaging with the services that are already available (e.g. msn or other usual IM service).
I definitely need more than the 10 MB space I have for email now. It's silly when there are free email services that provide 1 GB.
We desperately need more room in our inboxes!!! I use email all day every day, and even if it simply school related, I am involved with a number of groups where I need to be able to save emails--my box is constantly over its limit, which is very frustrating.
Survey says..."no." Have a good day Lance.
I use only public computers on campus, so accesibility/seciruty is an issue. I rarely use anything besides basic email. I commute a long distance to class, so most of my access is from home.
a way to be signaled so I don't need to wait in sub-zero for the bionic bus
Need more space on email accounts!!! At least 100MB to stay competitive with other universities.
I probably would mostly use UIIM to communicate with offices and help desks. I might set up a meeting over IM, but that requires someone to be at the computer. It might be helpful to do a group project but the frequency of those in my major is small.
we need more email capacity.
Permanence of accounts would be good. If once a student graduates they lose access to their IM account at the university overnight, I think few people will use it. They want a more permanent solution.
People need to be more careful/informed about maintaining their routing address. Professors and TAs need to know what to do in the event that a student's email is bouncing back--especially when students don't even realize their mail is bouncing. I used to use Webmail, but now I use Mozilla. The interface is much more user-friendly and intuitive. I don't care as much about adding new methods of communication as I do about refining what we already have. Give me an email client that works smoothly and intuitively and that I can access both on and off campus, and I'll be content.
No other institution I have been affilisted has made it possible for spammers to have access to my e-mail address. I do not know whether this is happening because this is a public university and names of students are public record (this enabling spammers to construct plausible e-mail addresses by using those names, or whether this happened early on when clubs and various organizations got access to me address because I did not know I had to opt out to not receive their messages. I think the better solution is to make every msg sent by a campus org to be required to be sent through a central vetting office, so they and the spammers that infiltrate their ranks, canb't get at my address at all. Second, why is it that spam which is detected by the univ filter still sent to me so I have to deal with it? If your server has marked it as spam, then it should delete it (I think this is caused by having the server on which it is detected not be the same as the one that sends it out? or some such, Finally, I'd like to be able to see all my current info on one integrated page - classes I teach, those I take, the times and places and class #'s, room numbers of classes and students with all their info, etc ... all accessible fron one page, so I don't have to use isis for one thing, osiris for another, and so forth
I wouldn't really use IMs for chatting. If I could use it, however, to speak with a TA or Proffesor that would be nice.
Being able to send email remotely through a program such as Eudora without SMTP server--would help for those connecting on wireless servers who don't use an ISP.
We should really be able to pick our own names! If your name is long it gets cut off and is very un-user friendly.
Why re-invent the wheel? Standardizing, say, AIM as the university sanctioned does more with fewer resources.
Just so it is not 100% Webmail! It should have POP or IMAP access
none
Bigger mailbox, bigger mailbox, bigger mailbox!
IM has yet to catch on among my clssmates. It is perceived as impersonal. It is not possible to see/interpret nonverbal cues.
I would like to be able to pay my Ubill ONLINE. By check OR credit card. Credit card payments SHOULD be allowed at least up to a certain amount. Honestly, I don't want to have to go to jessup or pay for a stamp to mail a check for $26. I pay all my other bills online, I don't buy stamps. Its really old school to not have online payments for Ubill. Even Kirkwood Community College offers that option; and other BIG TEN universities.
I probably would not use the university IM system unless contacting profesors or the university. AIM or yahoo is fine with me and is still personal instead of the university also tracking my conversation.
Other systems work well. Maybe the IM username could be part of the "phonebook" information if students wanted to make this information public
Anything thats done needs to be entirely web based, and fully cross browser compliant (IE6, Firefox, and Safari must be supported). Most of the stuff in section 3 is already available for free on the web (TadaLists, Upcoming, etc..). In fact, most of what this survey is talking about is already offered for free (or at a reasonable price) online. Just a lot of students don't know about it, well a lot of students don't know about stuff like the new MyFiles and University services.
In the above communication about the IM service, this service would be more helpful if it could communicate directly with current programs that are in use such as google IM, AIM, ICQ, or particuallarly Trillian as i dislike running more than one.
Everyone use's AIM. It would be difficult to convince students to switch.
my electronic needs pretty much adequately met, although I provide my own DSL internet, which is expensive, because dial up is much too slow
Students need to be mindful when communicating to Professors. In other words, professors deserve a certain formality that a lot of students forget about, and instant messaging might further reduce students' communication skills with people in position of power.
Before you start building IM clients, how about upgrading the storage space on the e-mail servers? Also, who cares about IM clients with virus protection? Now you're just making stuff up.
I like the engineering webmail accounts.
The more and the more secure, the better.
Why not just use google talk?
If you wanted to use University im you would need to make it compatable with something like Trillian or Adium so that other people could contact us. We have friends that don't go to this school and if you made it so that we coulnd't use something like yahoo or msn im we'd get mad.
From the content of this survey, I fear that IT is leaning toward a Microsoft implementation of some kind. I think Exchange Server has its place, but maybe not for all e-mail users. It would be a mistake to neglect users of non-Microsoft systems and clients (i.e., Linux, Mac OS X, Palm, or even open source applications on Windows) because people have different reasons for wanting different technologies. The e-mail forwarding that we currently use with the e-mail aliases (firstname-lastname@uiowa.edu) should be quite simple to implement on whatever solution is chosen. I recall reading at one point that the University must pay for spam filtering and virus protection by the user. This makes no sense to me at all. SpamAssassin is open source, and with decent (i.e., probably not default) configuration, it is very effective as well. I'm not sure that there is a totally effective virus protection yet that is open source, but I am aware of at least one such project in the works (the name escapes me at the moment). Keep looking into open source software as a cost-effective means to secure e-mail. For that matter, why can't the new servers be Linux-based themselves? It seems much more cost-effective to buy even a few dozen servers dedicated for e-mail, split the server load effectively, and maintain them than to go with an expensive commercial solution such as Exchange. Requiring digital signatures on e-mail would probably make the system less secure. Few users would know how to use the signatures properly, and many e-mail clients already have the capacity to use them if the user wishes. Also, the ability to recall messages under Exchange server does not work reliably; I have seen a system where people try to recall messages, and the recipient ends up just getting two messages. I do not think this feature is important enough to abandon standards-compliant e-mail. Also, please do not require the use of Microsoft's Sender ID, as open-source projects such as Debian cannot implement it, and it is of marginal effectiveness anyway. SpamAssassin along with blacklists already takes care of most of the problem.
try and make them as compatible as you can with other systems

I would love to work at the ITS, I have a vast knowledge of internet communications technology and I administer the Sigma Chi network (wired and wireless), it's webpage, the internal server, and the analyzation of both network and internet traffic that is "load balanced" among two Qwest DSL lines.
Personally, I don't believe many people would use a university-sponsored messaging service to speak to other students. We already have our own programs that we know and understand and already speak to each other with. I believe such a messaging service would be important mostly when talking to TA's and professors. ICON does a great job of allowing discussions and chats- encourage this feature.
university instant messaging between students and anyone other than faculty and staff is unrealistic because of it won't be used outside the university (so, I wouln't be able to IM my friends that don't go to college here).
Install linux on computers. It would be a lot cheaper to do this, instead of changing an entire email server. Please be efficient & do this in a way that it would keep costs down. This will in turn help you, so that money will be better spent elsewhere in your department. Please take this into consideration.
I would be worried about my protection if I were using my HawkID on IM.
When communicating with support staff, especially the ITS help desk I would rather talk to a person.
I think the best method for setting up an IM service for the university would be to set up a jabber server (http://www.jabber.org/).
Need more space on the email. At my undergrad institution we have 100 MB!
more urgent than any of the previously listed "needs" is the expansion of e-mail capacity to much more than 10 megs. g-mail has a 2 gig capacity....
Although it is important to have a non-anonymous screen name for the University based IM system, some of us have undesireable/inappropriate HawkIDs, e.g. akhunt, porndyke. It might be more sensible for the student to choose from a list of options provided by ITS or put in a request from ITS
There are many people that don't use Windows on this campus. Keep this in mind when making a University IM. (Would it be based on Jabber or something similar?) Also remember that many people already have a messenger and wouldn't see much reason to change... Maybe provide a directory instead?
