Disseminating Information on the University of Iowa Campus

There are a number of ways to disseminate information to students

University bulletin boards

Candidates may post information about events on official UI bulletin boards. To do so, however, they must secure sponsorship of a recognized student organization. Posters can only advertise an event -- not a candidate or a cause.

Up to 19 posters may be submitted to the University Box Office, located in the Iowa Memorial Union. Posters are put up every Wednesday (except during vacations and summer) and must be delivered to the Box Office by 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Posters can remain on the bulletin boards for a maximum of two weeks.

Posters may not exceed 11 inches x 14 inches, and the name of the sponsoring organization must be clearly identified on the face of the poster. For a complete list of poster regulations, contact the University Box Office, phone 319/335-3041 or visit the web site.

Cambus posters

UI Cambus will also accept posters advertising events. Posters to be displayed on buses must follow the same regulations pertaining to those on bulletin boards.   Up to 32 copies may be submitted to the Kinnick Stadium Parking Lot Office (Cambus Office/100 Stadium Drive). Posters should be 11 inches tall in order to fit the poster holders on the buses. Maximum width is 17 inches. Most are either 11 x 8.5 inches or 11 x 17 inches. All posters should be printed on card stock. For more information, call 319/335-8633.

Residence Hall Bulletin Boards

Approval will be granted for each candidate to post on the main bulletin boards of each residence hall once prior to each election. Recognized student organizations that sponsor political events may also advertise those events.

In addition to advertising events, candidates and campaigns may post non-event related posters (such as posters encouraging voters to support a particular candidate or to register to vote) one time before each primary or general election.

Eleven posters will be needed to cover the main boards, and 139 posters are needed for display on all bulletin boards located on each floor of the residence halls. These must be stamped and distributed by the University Housing Office, 8 Burge Hall, 319/335-3000. For main boards, posters must be no larger than 11 x 14; for floor bulletin boards, posters must be no larger than 8 1/2 x 11. Posters can remain on bulletin boards for up to two weeks. Posters are only permitted on designated bulletin boards as outlined in the above section on bulletin boards. Posting is not permitted in any other area of residence halls.

Residence Hall Mailboxes

Candidates for public office and political organizations campaigning for election may make a general distribution of printed campaign literature once through the mailboxes prior to each election.

Materials for mailing must be approved by the Assistant to the Director, scheduled in advance, and delivered to locations designated by University Housing four (4) days prior to placement in mailboxes. This material does not have to be personally addressed. For information on scheduling and on the number of mailboxes, contact University Housing at 319/335-3000.

Resident Rooms

Campaign or election materials of any kind may not be distributed door-to-door, may not be placed underneath the doors or on doorknobs of residence hall rooms, and may not be placed in residential areas.

Distribution Tables at Dining Entrances

Candidates or their representatives may request to have a table set up one time in each designated area for the purpose of distributing literature or talking to students (see locations in this document, below). Requests should be made at least seven (7) days prior to date of activity to the Assistant to the Director of University Housing. For information, call 319/335-3000.  The maximum time limit for all distribution centers will be two and one half hours. Every effort will be made to grant permission in an equitable manner. Tables and space are available no more than once per candidate prior to each election.

All distributions are subject to reasonable regulations of time and place. Distribution must be made in a manner that does not restrict ingress or egress of people or normal movement within a building. Persons working the tables must remain at the table (no activity is allowed in check line, near the check stands, on stairs, or in foyers, etc.) Table placement shall be as follows:  Burge: in the hallway outside of the Burge Market Place (entrance)  Hillcrest: on the first level outside of the Riverview Lounge, down the hall from the Information Desk.

Requests to reserve private dining rooms must be made to the food service office of the designated dining room.

Dining Rooms

Anyone entering a dining room must have a board plan for that particular meal or pay for the meal at either Market Place entrance.

Candidates or their representatives who do not have a board plan for a particular meal may purchase a guest ticket for the meal at the entrance to either Market Place. A candidate may have informal discussions with students in the dining rooms. Activities that interfere with or disturb the normal dining room atmosphere are prohibited. Table to table "politicking" is prohibited.

Private dining rooms may be reserved by students who want to invite political candidates or their representatives to give formal speeches. These rooms can be requested through Residence Services using established procedures on a first come, first served basis. During meal hours, priority for these areas is given to students who normally eat in the requested dining area. If space is requested during a meal time, participants not on a board plan for that particular meal must pay for the meal at the entrance to the Market Place.
