Scholarships

Generally, scholarships are reserved for students with special qualifications, such as academic, athletic, or artistic talent. Awards are also available for students who are interested in particular fields of study, are members of underrepresented groups, live in certain areas of the country or demonstrate financial need by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year.

Scholarships are available from a variety of sources:

  • The University of Iowa Office of Student Financial Aid (UI OSFA)

Many of the scholarships awarded by OSFA require financial need; therefore, students must file the FAFSA and submit all required documents each year. Scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are depleted. Therefore, students should file their FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1 for the upcoming academic year.

A variety of scholarships are awarded by the Office of Admissions to first-year and transfer students. Students are automatically considered for some scholarships upon admission to the University and others require a separate application.

  • Individual University colleges/departments/programs

The following are links to some colleges and departments at the University of Iowa that award scholarships. If an academic department is not listed, check the departmental website for scholarship information.

  • Outside (non-University) businesses/organizations/agencies

A great way for students to investigate outside scholarships is by using a scholarship search on the web. Also contact businesses, civic, and fraternal organizations, parents' employers, churches, high school guidance offices, and public libraries. The Division of Sponsored Programs at the University of Iowa is also an excellent resource for outside scholarships.

If a student receives a scholarship check from an outside agency, the check must be submitted to the Office of Student Financial Aid (PDF Form) so the funds can be credited to the student's University account.
