Additional Scholarships
Scholarships Requiring Applications and/or Awarded by a High School or Outside Agency
The following scholarships require an application and/or recipients are selected by a high school or outside agency. For those scholarships that require financial need, students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit all required documents by as soon as possible after January 1 prior to the academic year for which they are applying.
Specific eligibility requirements are listed within each scholarship description. Check with the high school or agency awarding the scholarship for application deadline dates.
Air Force ROTC Scholarships--A variety of ROTC scholarships are available to students in health professions areas as well as other majors. Applications are available from the Department of Aerospace Military Studies, 126 South Quadrangle, (319) 335-9205; www.uiowa.edu/~afrotc or afrotc255@uiowa.edu
Horatio Alger Scholarship--Awarded to first-year students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents that possess a strong commitment to pursue a bachelor's degree. Applications must be completed the senior year of high school. Applicants must have demonstrated integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity, be involved in co-curricular and community activities, demonstrate critical financial need and graduate with a minimum 2.0 high school grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Army Emergency Relief - MG James Ursano Scholarship Fund--Awarded to dependent children, stepchildren, or legally adopted children of Army soldiers on active duty, retired, or deceased while on active duty or after retirement. The children of Grey Area Reservists are also eligible. Students must be unmarried for the entire academic year and under the age of 22 on year of application. Army ROTC Scholarship--A variety of ROTC scholarships are available to students in all majors. Applications are available from: Enrollment Counselor, Department of Military Science, Room 107, South Quadrangle, (319) 335-9187.
Arnold Trust Fund Award--Awarded to students who are orphans not over the age of 25 and who are residents of Linn County, Iowa. Award is based on financial need. Applications are available from St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 1340 Third Ave. S.E., Cedar Rapids, IA 52406.
Helen Bennett Scholarship--Awarded to entering first-year students who are a resident of Bennett, Iowa, and a graduate of Bennett High School. Financial need is considered. Students must be nominated. Applications available from Bennett High School guidance counselor, Bennett Community Schools, Box D, Bennett, IA 52721.
Robert D. Blue-Iowa Centennial Memorial Foundation--Awarded to residents of Iowa who will attend an accredited Iowa college or university. Applicants are expected to demonstrate literary and scholastic ability; exhibit qualities of truth, courage, and fellowship; and display moral force of character. Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship--Awarded to outstanding Iowa high school seniors. This scholarship is renewable for an additional three years, if conditions of initial award are maintained. Applications are available from the Iowa College Student Aid Commission web site.
Carver Scholars Program--Awarded to full-time students who will be starting their junior year in the fall semester of the award year. Scholarship recipients will be of great potential and promise who are having to work hard to make ends meet and have been faced with unusual or debilitating circumstances in their lives. Students must present evidence of unusual social and/or other barriers to attending college full-time (from one-parent families; attending college while working full-time; have a social, mental, or physical handicap; have a family to support, etc.). Recipients must be U.S. citizens and have graduated from an accredited high school in the state of Iowa, earned an Iowa G.E.D., or have been a resident of Iowa for at least five consecutive years immediately prior to application. Eligible students must demonstrate financial need by filing the FAFSA prior to March 1 of the award year. Students must have a minimum grade-point average of 2.8. Applications are available on the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust web site, at www.carvertrust.org (under the Scholarships tab at the top of the page, select the Apply Online First Year link on the right side of the screen).
This scholarship may be renewed for one additional year or until a baccalaureate degree is received, whichever comes first. Recipients awarded for their junior year must submit a renewal application at www.carvertrust.org for scholarship renewal for their senior year (under the Scholarships tab at the top of the page, select the Apply Online Renewal link on the right side of the screen).
Tim Dwight Foundation, Inc. Scholarship Program--General information and the application are available on the following web site: www.timdwightfoundation.com.
Elliko Shimosato and Michael A. Evans Fund--Awarded to a Vietnam veteran or the child of a Vietnam veteran. Must be an Iowa resident or native of Iowa, attending full-time and showing financial need by filing a FAFSA no later than June 1st. A letter of application must be sent to the Office of Student Financial Aid, 208 Calvin Hall, Iowa City, IA 52242-1315. Be sure to include a brief statement of your educational goals, whether you are the veteran or the child of the veteran, the veteran's full name, your full name, address and social security number. The application deadline is June 1.
Pearl H. Falk Scholarship--Awarded to full-time students of Protestant faith who are a resident of Iowa. Financial need is considered. This scholarship may be renewed. Contact the Trust Department at MidWestOne Bank, P.O. Box 1700, Iowa City, IA 52244, (319) 356-5933.
Charles E. Fahrney Foundation--Awarded to full-time students who are residents of Wapello County (Iowa) attending an Iowa college or university and making satisfactory progress toward a degree. Grinnell Mutual Group Foundation Fund--Awarded to first-year full-time students with a high school GPA of 2.5 or higher who are a dependent child (natural, adopted, or step-child) of a current employee of the company or of an affiliated mutual company. This award is not renewable. Applications are available at www.gmrc.com or you may write to Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company, Advertising and Community Relations Department, P.O. Iowa Farm Scholarship/Iowa Basketball Lettermen Fund--Awarded to entering first-year students in the top one-fourth of their high school graduating class whose parents own and operate an Iowa farm. Financial need is considered. One of the awards will be granted each year in memory of Chris Street, an Iowa basketball player killed in a 1993 traffic accident. Participation in interscholastic high school athletics also will be considered in determining this recipient. Iowa Air National Guard--The 132d Fighter Wing, Iowa Air National Guard, in Des Moines offers benefits to aid students with their educational expenses. For information, visit the Air National Guard web site at www.goang.com.
Iowa National Guard Scholarship--Awarded to first-year, upperclass, and graduate students who meet the following requirements: moral, age, medical, and qualifying placement aptitude scores on the Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery test. This scholarship is renewable based on Selective Reserve drilling status of local National Guard units. Applications are available from the Iowa National Guard, 925 S. IPSCO Scholarship--Awarded to undergraduate students majoring in computer science, engineering, marketing, or management who have an interest in working in the steel industry. This scholarship may be renewed for up to three additional years, if appropriate grade-point average is maintained. Phyllis R. Johnson Memorial Scholarship--Awarded to an entering first-year student who is a dependent or relative of an employee of the Principal Financial Group. This scholarship is based on financial need. The application deadline is March 15. This scholarship may be renewed if the student is enrolled full-time, maintains at least a 3.0 grade point average, continues to meet the financial need requirements, and the relative remains employed at Principal Financial Group. To apply, send a letter of interest to the University of Iowa Office of Student Financial Aid. The letter must clearly state the name of the Principal employee and your relationship to that person.
Joan Lahart-Van Bortel Endowed Scholarship--Awarded to an entering freshman woman who resides in or has graduated from a Lucas County (Iowa) high school. If no qualified applicant is found, entering female freshmen from Monroe, Marion, Wayne, or Appanoose, Iowa, may be considered. Based on academic merit and financial need will be considered. Lappin Family Scholarship Fund--Awarded to graduates of Rock Island High School who plan to attend The University of Iowa as undergraduates. Students must be a member of the National Honor Society. Financial need is a minor consideration. This scholarship may be renewed for up to an additional three years if a 2.50 UI cumulative grade-point average is maintained. Edward Arthur Mellinger Education Foundation, Inc.--Awarded to residents who live in the following western Illinois counties: Fulton, Henderson, Knox, McDonough, Mercer, Warren. Miss Iowa Speedway Scholarship--Awarded by the Iowa Speedway Foundation in Newton, Iowa to the winner of the Miss Iowa Speedway contest. Applicants must be a single student who is at least 18 years old and will be enrolled at an accredited college or university in the United States for the upcoming school year. Miss Iowa Speedway is expected to participate in Iowa Speedway's main events in Newton, Iowa. Additional information and the application are available on the Iowa Speedway web page.
LaVerne Noyes Scholarship--Awarded to undergraduate students with no prior degree who are U.S. citizens and are direct blood descendants of U.S. Army or Navy veterans who served in World War I as specified on the application. Financial need is required. A FAFSA must be completed as soon as possible after January 1 for the upcoming academic year. This scholarship may be renewed for an additional three years (eight semesters total) or until a baccalaureate degree is received, whichever comes first. Ronald Rohling Scholarship--Awarded to an entering first-year full-time student who is a graduate of Muscatine (Iowa) High School.Applications are available from the Muscatine High School Scholarship Committee, Guidance Department, Muscatine High School, 2705 Cedar St., Muscatine, IA 52761.
Edward J. Schwartz Perpetual Educational Trust Fund--Awarded to residents of Wapello County (Iowa) who are attending The University of Iowa full-time. This scholarship is based on scholastic performance, leadership, citizenship, and financial need. Applications are available from South Ottumwa Savings Bank, Trust Department, P.O. Henry B. Tippie University of Iowa Scholarship--Awarded to graduates of Belle Plaine (Iowa) Community Schools, with preference given to business majors. This scholarship may be renewed dependent upon maintaining a 2.50 UI cumulative grade-point average and full-time enrollment status. War Orphans Educational Aid--Awarded to students who are war orphans (the child of a man or woman who died as a result of service during W.W.I, W.W.II, the Korean War, or the Vietnam War, or an orphan of a National Guardsman or member of the Reserve component who died as a result of training or other duties). Florence Warnock Scholarship--Awarded annually to a graduating senior from a Black Hawk County (Iowa) high school who has a 3.00 high school grade-point average. Student must file a FAFSA and show financial need; be an active membership in a church, synagogue, or mosque; and demonstrate character, citizenship, and leadership qualities. Larry & Jeanette Waters Endowed Fund--Awarded to entering first-year students with financial need from Corning, Cumberland-Massena, or Greenfield-Fontanelle high schools (in descending order of preference). If there are no qualified candidates from these specific high schools, all high schools from southwest Iowa may be considered. No application is required. Recipients will be chosen by the appropriate high school scholarship committees.
University of Iowa Black Alumni Scholarship--Awarded to selected full-time sophomore through graduate students of Afro-American heritage with a UI cumulative grade-point average of at least 2.50. Academic achievement, financial need, and service to the community are considered. Applications are available from the Center for Diversity and Enrichment, 24 Phillips Hall; Office of Student Financial Aid, 208 Calvin Hall; or the Graduate College, 6 Gilmore Hall.
UI Homecoming Scholarship--Awarded to students who will have sophomore or junior standing by September 1 who possess a minimum GPA of 2.974 and demonstrate outstanding leadership to the University of Iowa and its community. Additional information is available from the Office of Student Life 145 Iowa Memorial Union. Applications are available on the UI Homecoming web site.
USS Scholarship--Awarded to entering first-year students based on academic performance and financial need. Recipients must be full-time students in a major that has application in the business environment. Preference is given to sons and daughters of USS--United States Steel, Inc.
