Merit and Need-Based Financial Aid

Financial aid is awarded to students based on merit, financial need, or both. Merit scholarships are awarded based on the stated criteria, usually a high grade point average and ACT score or exceptional talent. Need-based scholarships and grants are awarded based upon a student's financial need. Some scholarship requirements include both merit and need-based criteria.

Bridging the Gap

Your college education will be one of the most important investments you and your family will ever make. Financial aid can help you bridge the gap between your own resources and the cost of education, including tuition, fees, room and board, and other living expenses. We emphasize bridging the gap because you and your family are primarily responsible for your college expenses.

The University of Iowa Office of Student Financial Aid makes every effort to assist you and your family in obtaining the financial aid funds that you may need to meet expenses if your/your family's resources are not adequate.

After the University of Iowa Office of Student Financial Aid has received your required documents, your financial aid package is assembled and your award notification will be available on ISIS.

The Award Notification lists the maximum eligibility for each of the funds offered based on your application information. Amounts on the Award Notification are actual awards, unless the award is listed as an unofficial amount.
