General News and Scholarship Information

IMPORTANT ADMISSION DEADLINE

The Admission deadline is APRIL 1ST. This is especially important due to the fact that many scholarships that are available use this admission list for consideration of all qualified individuals.

Vincent L. Hawkinson Foundation for Peace and Justice Scholarship

Applicants must be a resident of (or currently attending school in) Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota or Wisconsin. Scholarship finalists must be available for a personal interview in Minneapolis and must attend an award ceremony in the fall. Scholarship awards are announced by July 1. Scholarships are awarded without regard to religious affiliation. All decisions by the Hawkinson Foundation Selection Committee are final. Applications are available from: The Vincent L. Hawkinson Foundation for Peace and Justice, c/o Grace University Lutheran Church, 324 Harvard Street S.E., Minneapolis, MN 55414. Postmark deadline date for application is April 1.

Horatio Alger Iowa Scholarship Program

If you are a IOWA HIGH SCHOOL student who sees education as a way out of adversity, opportunity awaits you. The Horatio Alger Association's scholarship program is the country's largest, tailored for young people in need who have faced and overcome great adversity in their lives. To apply for Horatio Alger Association scholarships during your high school senior year, please visit their web site at horatioalger.org/scholarships.

Grinnell Mutual Group Foundation Fund

Available to first-year full-time students with a high school GPA of 2.5 or higher who are a dependent child (natural, adopted, or stepchild) of a current employee of the company or of an affiliated mutual company. Awards are for $1,000 and are non-renewable. Applications will be available on the web at www.gmrc.com on March 1 or you may request an application now by writing to Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company, Advertising and Community Relations Department, P.O. Box 790, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. The deadline for application is April 1st each calendar year.

Louisa County 4-H Foundation

The Louisa County 4-H Foundation will be offering a $250 scholarship to one Louisa County 4-H Alumnus. Alumni 4-H'ers applying for the scholarship, to be awarded to any institution of higher learning during their second semester of school, need to complete an application by July 1.

Applicants should draft their own letter of application, not to exceed four pages, plus a letter of recommendation from a former 4-H club leader. The following 4-H related information should be included in the application: Name of club and number of years in 4-H, leadership and community service, awards received, major 4-H projects, attendance or leadership at out-of-county 4-H events. 4-H'ers should also tell how 4-H has influenced their life choices and state future plans and goals. Other information may be included in the application, but it should not exceed four pages plus the letter of recommendation.

Scholarship Fraud Prevention Act Signed by Clinton

In an effort to protect the public against fraud by unscrupulous companies posing as scholarship search and/or foundations or services, The Clinton Administration signed into law the College Scholarship Fraud Prevention Act of 2000. For details see scholarship fraud bill.

Evalee C. Schwarz Charitable Trust for Education

Offers 0% interest rate loans to deserving graduate and undergraduate students who would otherwise qualify for financial aid from government grants. Applicants rank in the top 10% both nationally and in their class. Applicants must also be a resident in the state of the school he/she is attending. No student seeking to complete a law degree is eligible to apply.

Scholarships for Military Children

The Scholarships for Military Children Program was created to recognize the contributions of military families to the readiness of the fighting force and to celebrate the role of the commissary in the military family community. If your mother or father is active duty, reserve/guard, or retired military personnel or you are the survivor of a deceased member, and you have a military dependent I.D. card you can apply! Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund

Has been created to provide education assistance for post secondary study to financially needy children and spouses of those killed or permanently disabled as a direct result of the terrorist attacks on Tuesday, September 11, 2001.

Applicants may be currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a course of study at an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school in the United States. Police Corps Scholarships

Police Corps participants commit to:

  • earn their baccalaureate degree
  • complete rigorous, residential Police Corps training
  • serve for four years as a patrol officer with a designated agency in an area of great need
Once admitted you will be eligible to receive up to $7,500 per academic year toward your educational expenses. Men and women of all backgrounds are eligible to apply. Regardless of family income or resources, who attend a public or non-profit college.
