Cost of Attendance

The Office of Student Financial Aid establishes a standard estimated cost of attendance for students. The estimated cost of attendance figures reflect modest but adequate expenses for University of Iowa students and are based on research conducted by the Office of Student Financial Aid. While actual expenses of individual students will vary based on personal lifestyle choices, the estimated cost should assist you in planning your own budget. The estimated cost of attendance includes both costs that are billed directly by the University and other, or miscellaneous, costs.

The amount listed for room and board is based on a weighted average of all on-campus room contracts with full board and off-campus room and board costs. Although your actual residence hall contract or off-campus housing and food costs may be different, the Office of Student Financial Aid uses the same estimated cost for determining the cost of attendance for all students living on and off campus.

Other expenses in the estimated cost of attendance figures include books and supplies, personal, and transportation costs. These other expenses are included in the cost of attendance but are not billed to you by the University. Personal expenses include, but are not limited to, items such as clothing, entertainment, and laundry. These are the most variable expenses since they reflect personal spending habits.

The undergraduate and graduate estimated costs of attendance are provided via the sidebar links above. Some colleges and certain majors will have higher amounts for tuition and fees. For detailed information about the different rates for tuition and fees, refer to the Office of the Registrar's Tuition and Fee Tables.

The Tuition & Fees and Books & Supplies amounts are for full-time status (twelve or more hours each semester for undergraduate students and nine or more hours each semester for graduate students).
